B Y A L T H E A S . M I L L E R I t was one of those mornings when bedlam prevailed. At least a har ried mother thought so. While oatmeal was cooking and bacon frying, Mother tried to put her attention to the packing of four lunches. (The only reason she doesn’t have to pack five is that Paul works in the high school “ caf” and gets his lunch in payment.) “ Let’s see. How can I tempt Sharon to eat and make it nourishing? Watch that clock!” Moth er reminded herself. “ Althea, hurry, dear! Your hair looks fine. Ardyth, you may not wear that dress. It’s too short. We’ll give it away. Paul save some bacon for the girls. Mark, are you watching the toast? Sharon, you must take time to drink this orange juice and eat a banana.” Schoolmates arrived at the house to walk to school with our girls as one by one they left the house. Ardyth tore out to the kitchen for a hasty goodbye with the parting remark: “Mother, aren’t you glad you have a lot of vigorous children?” “ That’s a debatable question at this moment, Honey. Give me a little time to think about it.” Mother did think about it during her quiet hour. Vigor is a sign of life. As maddening as this daily morning confusion can be, she is grateful that her “ flock” is strong, healthy, normal. Yet this is not all there is to life. When Jesus Christ yielded up His life on Calvary’s cross some 1900 years ago He did so that men might have the only kind of life that will go on for eternity. “ I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it . . . abundantly” (John 10:10). It’s Easter again; the time of the singing of birds and awakening of the flowers. But if Easter is not more than these, we. have missed true LIFE. How often this life seems to be missing from the visible church. Else why do the saints have to be coaxed, cajoled, commanded to be faithful to the Christ of Golgotha’s brow? “ Yes, Arydth, I’m glad you are all vigorous. May it please God that at this Easter time there will be a re newal of spiritual vigor among His own.”
