FBA: Shipments Shrink In April
Industry shipments of corrugated products decreased 2.1 percent, from 32.65 bsf in April of 2019 to 31.96 bsf in April of 2020, the Fi- bre Box Association (FBA) reported. Average week shipments also decreased 2.1 percent, from 7.775 bsf in 2019 to 7.611 bsf in 2020. Shipments of corrugated products are up 1.5 percent year-to-date. Containerboard consumption was 2.657 million tons in April of 2020, down from 2.690 million tons, or 1.2 percent, in April of 2019. Consumption increased 3.5 percent year-to- date over 2019. Containerboard inventory at corrugator plants increased 7.7 percent, from 2.1278 million tons in March to 2.2914 million tons in April 2020. Weeks of supply grew from 3.3 in March to 3.6 in April, or 9.1 percent. “In addition to replenishing low inventories at the end of March from that month’s boom in shipments, declining box shipments this month led to an inventory increase of 145,000 tons,” noted Dick Storat in his Scoring Boxes newsletter. “At the end of April, container- board inventories at mills and box plants were 2.2 percent higher than a year earlier.” Storat also provided data that reflected
Arden and Esko, ICPF also been working with faculty to explore and potentially configure systems to allow students remote access to their university’s centralized packaging design software from home. Stu- dents normally access the software through the utilization of one of the university computers within the bank desk tops that are located in each campus’s design lab. ICPF’s initiatives to fulfill its mission are ongoing, even through the ravages of COVID-19. A cross section of this work follows. Graduates, Student Interns Still Seeking Positions In 2020 During the past six months, there have been over 70 job postings placed on the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation’s (ICPF) career portal by ICPF partner firms wishing to get an early start on their college recruiting for spring 2020. In both ICPF’s resume bank and in ICPF’s corrugated career network, however, ICPF continues to have far more students seeking summer internships and new 2020 gradu- More than 100 students gathered in East Lansing, Michigan, to participate in ICPF’s Annual Teleconference. More than 500 students and faculty across 20 campuses across the country participated remotely.

the impact of the coronavirus: “As economic pain from the pandemic intensified last month, record declines in consumer spending and manufacturing have flooded the record books. Retail sales declined by 16.4 percent in April, as grocery store sales dropped 13.3 percent, gen- eral stores sales dropped by 20.8 percent, and restaurant sales declined by 29.5 percent. Only online sales posted a monthly sales increase (8.4 percent) as quarantines forced more purchases to be made online, a trend not likely to fully reverse itself after the pandemic passes.” AF&PA Releases April 2020 Containerboard Report AF&PA reported that total containerboard production in April increased seven percent compared to April 2019. It was up seven percent when compared to the same four months of 2019. April 2020 production of container- board for export increased 29 percent compared to the same month last year; it was up 41 percent year-to-date. The containerboard operating rate was 95.9 percent, up 5.2 points from April 2019 and up 5.6 points year-to-date. Mill inventories of containerboard at the end of April de- creased 19,000 short tons from the previous month and were up 28,000 short tons compared to April 2019.

ISM: Economic Downturn To Continue Through 2020
Revenue for 2020 is expected to decrease, on aver- age, by 10.3 percent. This is 15.1 percentage points lower than the 4.8 percent increase forecast in December 2019 for all of 2020, and 12.2 percentage points lower than the 1.9 percent increase reported for 2019 over 2018. Eighteen percent of respondents say that revenues for 2020 will in- crease 10.6 percent, on average, over 2019. Conversely, 58 percent say their revenues will decrease, on average, 21.2 percent, and the remaining 24 percent indicate no change. With the operating rate at 75.9 percent, an ex- pected capital expenditure decrease of 19.1 percent, an expected decrease of 1.6 percent for prices paid for raw materials, and employment expected to decrease by 5.3 percent by the end of 2020, manufacturing has been neg- atively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. “With 15 of the 18 manufacturing sector industries — including five of the six big industry sectors — predicting revenue de- clines for 2020, panelists forecast that recovery will likely
The economic downturn in the U.S. will continue for the rest of 2020, say the nation’s purchasing and supply ex- ecutives in the Spring 2020 Semiannual Economic Fore- cast. Expectations for the remainder for 2020 have been clouded by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic; both manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors are signal- ing contraction. These projections are part of the forecast issued by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Business Sur- vey Committees. The forecast was presented last week by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the ISM Man- ufacturing Business Survey Committee, and Anthony S. Nieves, CPSM, C.P.M., A.P.P., CFPM, Chair of the ISM Non-Manufacturing Business Survey Committee.
not occur until near the end of the year. The sectors’ responses were consistent with the industry-performance reports in April’s Re- port On Business,” says Fiore. The two industries reporting expecta- tions of growth in revenue for 2020 are: Ap- parel, Leather & Allied Products; and Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products. The 15 man- ufacturing industries expecting decreases in revenue in 2020 — listed in order — are: Printing & Related Support Activities; Pe- troleum & Coal Products; Transportation Equipment; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Primary Metals; Plastics & Rubber Products; Machinery; Furniture & Related Products; Textile Mills; Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Fabricated Metal Products; Electrical Equip- ment, Appliances & Components; Comput- er & Electronic Products; Chemical Prod- ucts; and Paper Products. Purchasing and supply managers report that their companies are currently operat- ing, on average, at 75.9 percent of normal capacity, 7.8 percentage points less than was reported in December 2019. Production capacity in manufacturing is expected to decrease 3.6 percent in 2020. This compares to an increase of 3.1 percent reported for 2019, and a prediction in De- cember 2019 for an increase of 3.3 percent for 2020. Survey respondents expect a 19.1 per- cent decrease in capital expenditures in 2020. This is lower than the 2.1 percent decrease predicted by the panel in the De- cember 2019 forecast for 2020. Current- ly, 10 percent of respondents predict in- creased capital expenditures in 2020, with

FBA Creates Thank You Video To Industry’s Essential Workers
Box Shipments ( U.S. Corrugated Product Shipments) Industry Shipments In Billions of Square Feet Month April 2020
The Fibre Box Association (FBA) has created a video thank you to the industry’s essential workers. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, corrugated box manufacturers have been working to keep transport packaging flowing to mak- ers of products, including packaging for food and other consumer products, medical and pharmaceutical prod- ucts, tissue and hygiene products and more. The U.S. corrugated packaging industry is a $35.2bil- lion manufacturing sector. There are 1,183 box plants op- erating in nearly 1,000 cities and towns across America. The corrugated industry provides employment and bene- fits to more than 100,000 Americans. The industry makes packaging that is essential to our everyday lives from re- newable and recyclable resources. In fact, more than 95 percent of all goods consumed in North America are pack- aged and transported in corrugated packaging and close to 40 percent of all corrugated packaging produced annu- ally is used to package food and beverages. Disruption in the availability of these goods would cause hardships to consumers across the country who de- pend on steady and stable supplies. Corrugated manufac- turers are dedicated to continuing to operate box plants under the guidelines of the CDC and OSHA. Visit fibrebox.org to see the video.

AF&PA: U.S. Paper Industry Achieves Consistently High Recycling Rate The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) last week announced 66.2 percent of paper consumed in the United States was recovered for recycling in 2019. Over the last decade, the U.S. paper industry achieved a consistently high recycling rate, meeting or exceeding 63 percent since 2009 — a rate that’s nearly doubled since 1990, when the industry first set a paper recycling goal. The recycling rate for old corrugated containers (OCC) in 2019 was 92.0 percent, and the three-year average OCC recycling rate is 92.3 percent. “Paper recycling continues to be an environmental suc- cess story,” said AF&PA President and CEO Heidi Brock. “More than twice as much paper is recycled than is sent to landfills, saving an average of 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space for each ton of paper recycled. This is a testament to consumer behavior and an industry commitment to pa- per recycling. AF&PA members continue to invest in man- ufacturing infrastructure that will allow us to recycle even more paper in the years ahead.” Paper recycling helps extend the life of paper and paper-based packaging products, making it an integral part of the industry’s sustainability story. Recycled paper fibers can be used at least seven times to make new and innovative paper products.

Paul H. Vishny, A Man of Quiet Integrity, AICC’s Guiding Light for 40 Years BY STEVE YOUNG
Paul H. Vishny, former General Counsel and Secretary of AICC, The Inde- pendent Packaging Association, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, in Beachwood, Ohio, following a long illness. He was 89. Paul was born in Chicago in 1931. He was a graduate of University of Illi- nois and DePaul University School of Law. He was also an ordained Rabbi, having received his rabbinical degree in 1957 from Hebrew Theological

College in Chicago. Over the course of his legal career he was a partner in several Chicago firms, including Kopstein & Vishny, D’Ancona & Pflaum, and later Seyfarth Shaw. Paul served as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of AICC for 40 years – from the day of the Association’s found- ing in 1974 until his retirement from legal practice in 2014. I first met Paul in 1983, when I began working for the Association in its Alexandria, Virginia, office. In those early days of the Association, when the corrugated industry was rocked with antitrust suits and unethical deal- ings on seemingly every front, it fell to Paul to be the voice of calm amid the storm. He was the attentive, sometimes assertive, presence at the meetings of the Board of Directors and its various committees of the day. He acted as secretary, parliamentarian, umpire and even father-confessor. He was the moral compass for the Association’s actions. Paul’s role made him a confidante and close collaborator of AICC’s elected leadership, and many have come forward with special memories and tributes. Past Chairman Greg Tucker (2013-2014), CEO of Bay Cities in Pico Rivera, California, knew Paul for more than 35 years and remembers him as the “ballast” and the “conscience” of the Association. Echoing that theme, Past President Jim Davis (1999-2000), formerly of DeLine Box Co., said, “His rabbinical sense of justice kept us on the straight and narrow.” Chuck Fienning, former owner of Sumter Packaging, in Sumter, South Carolina, and AICC Chairman in 2012-2013, said, “In all the years I knew him, he demonstrated the professional demeanor, knowledge, integrity and concern for AICC that helped guide our leadership over the decades.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 14 Steve Young, right, visited Paul Vishny and his wife, Michele, in Beachwood, Ohio, on December 27, 2018.

Past Chair Cindy Baker (2005-2006), formerly of Scope Packaging and now with New-Indy triPAQ in Cerritos, Cali- fornia, called Paul “a true gentleman in every sense. When I think of him I have nothing but warmth in every memo- ry.” Another Californian, Bob Thacker, who served as AICC President in 1987-1988 when he was owner of Thacker Container Company, remembers Paul for his “wise coun- sel” and as a “peacemaker.” He added: “In the evening with a glass of red wine in hand, he was my drinking buddy too.” Past President Joseph R. Palmeri (1996-1997), COO of Jamestown Container Companies in Falconer, New York, recalled the “privilege of working with Paul on many proj- ects such as SuperCorrExpo and FirstPak. He was always helpful and available for any question I may have had.” Past President Craig Hoyt (2000-2001) agreed, saying, “I specifically remember what great advice he gave to us during our negotiations for our long-term SuperCorrExpo agreement with TAPPI.” Said Greg Arvanigian, who served as AICC Chairman in 2001-2002, said, “Paul was always the calm voice of reason in the room.” Larry Cooper, former owner of C&B Display Packag- ing in Mississauga, Ontario, and AICC Chairman in 2003- 2004, called Paul “the wonderful, steady hand that guided AICC though the years. He will be missed.” Andrew Pier-

Said AICC General Counsel David Goch, who succeeded Paul on his retire- ment in 2014, “Despite his unmatched tenure as AICC’s General Counsel, he willingly, with no hesitation, entrusted his ‘baby’ to me.” AICC President Mike D’Angelo, said, “For me, an AICC meeting didn’t truly start until Paul spoke. He had the most wonderful voice. “Gentle Steel” is how I referred to it then and how I recall it now. It was one of those things that made AICC, well, AICC.” Paul is also remembered along with Dick Troll, a found- er, past president and the first executive director of AICC,

members could come together. AICC’s current, longtime partnership with TAPPI in our jointly owned SuperCorrEx- po franchise is one of the fruits of his work. He also worked with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Canadian Bu-
reau of Competition to lay the groundwork for our FirstPak program. For all he did for AICC, he was named into the Association’s Hall of Fame in 1991. Outside his service to AICC, he also served as General Counsel for the Telecom- munications Industry Association (TIA), and he authored legal treatises on international trade. He was also a scholar of Judaic law, and authored “The Siddur Companion,” a book to help others of faith to better under- stand the prayers of the Jewish people. Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Michele, in March of 2019, and is survived by three daughters: Deborah S. Vishny; Renana A. Friedman and Miriam L. Vishny; and four grandchildren. The share of paper category capacity dropped from 44 percent in 2009 to 34 percent in 2019 as newsprint and printing-writing paper capacities continued to decline, more than offsetting the gains in tissue paper capacity. Several machines producing the communication paper grades have been permanently closed or converted to the production of containerboard and packaging papers. Containerboard capacity increased 1.5 percent in 2019, reaching a record 40.3 million tons – the ninth consecutive increase in containerboard capacity. As a result, contain- erboard accounted for 48.6 percent of U.S. paper and pa- perboard capacity in 2019, up from 39.3 percent in 2009. The report includes U.S. industry capacity data for 2019 and 2020 for all major grades of paper, paperboard and pulp, as well as fiber consumption, based on a compre- hensive survey of more than 300 U.S. pulp and paper mills conducted during February and early March 2020. Survey data includes responses from companies representing 87 percent of U.S. paper and paperboard industry capacity, with estimates completing the data set. The survey with detailed tables is available for $2,300.
