The benefits of raising chickens in the city

When do I need to pay taxes on my hobby farm?

• Eggs! Of course, one of the best reasons to raise chickens is to have access to their eggs. Fresh eggs have higher levels of healthy stuff like omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A. Raising chickens is a great option for many people but be sure you do it responsibly. Do your research and ask for help from the experts before making a purchase you’re not quite ready for.

Amongst environment- and health-conscious city dwellers, a new movement has been gaining steam that brings a little country into the urban sprawl: backyard chickens. For those who have enough room to comfortably and safely keep chickens, it’s a great way to improve your quality of life. Here are just a few of the benefits of rais- ing chickens in the city: • Sustainability. The mass breeding of chickens and the large-scale egg production it feeds are a huge industry that contributes to our collective carbon footprint. Having your own chickens is a way to decrease your own. • Being close to nature. Many chicken owners report that caring for animals is a great way to feel closer to nature in a dense, urban environment. • Great for compost. You might think that chicken waste would be a big problem in a city. On the contrary: chicken waste is a great addition to your compost and can be a great help to your garden. • Food waste solution. Although they’re not quite as voracious as pigs, chickens eat a lot of differ- ent things. Feeding your own leftover food to your chickens can be a great way to make sure nothing goes to waste.

The difference between a small working farm and a hobby farm can sometimes be a bit blurry. What’s more, depending on which govern- ment agency you’re dealing with, the same operation can be classified as a small farm for one and a hobby farm for another. If your establishment is a full- or part-time farm, you may have to pay some tax, but you’ll also be eligible for benefits from the government. The taxes you’ll need to pay on your hobby farm will de- pend on several different fac- tors, including:

• Do you make a profit? The government will consider your farm a business if it generates an income. Be sure to declare all profits made when you file your tax return. • Is the farm your main source of income? Some people work a farm part of the time but also have a day-job. You may be eligible for some tax breaks as a part-time farmer but you’ll also have to change your tax status. You should consult a professional tax expert to find out exactly what your situation is. • Do you intend to make farming your living? Your intentions for your farm matter to the Canada Revenue Agency. If you’re just starting out and intend for your farm to become your primary source of income in the future, there are also helpful programs available to you through the government. What’s most important when determining the tax status of your hobby farm is to get the best information you can. Consult an accountant if you’re not sure so you don’t end up owing the government money.
