The mayors on counties council are angry that the provincial government failed to include the rural viewpoint in the new mandatory certification process it created for municipal fire departments throughout the province. Mayor Gary Barton of Champlain Township raised the issue during the March 14 com- mittee of the whole session of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR). The March 11 deadline for comment on the process has already passed but, he noted, that should not stop rural municipalities like his and county councils from lobbying the province for some kind of revision that will at least help rural municipalities cope with the potential financial impact. i8FTIPVMEBMMCFDPODFSOFECZUIJT u
The provincial government has created a new certification process it plans to make mandatory for firefighters in Ontario. The pro- cess includes guidelines for specific training courses that firefighters must complete as part of their initial certification and follow-up recertification. The provincial certification system pro- posed will include a grandfathering clause to cover existing firefighters who have already undergone various training programs over the years they have been with their local fire departments.
