liness, love, and many other virtues, so that He may be seen and “ ad mired in all them that believe.” ■—Arnold Frank. 27. Looking Up “They looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up” (Acts 1:10). They never forgot what they saw. It was forever etched on their souls, and His words, “Ye shall be my wit nesses,” never failed to ring in their ears. He had died, but He was alive. He had gone away, but He was com ing back. They would never forget to. look up. They would listen expect antly fo r His voice. . . When did Christians ever more need to get their eyes away from earth’s bloody, black sin than now? Where will we get an upward perspective, if we do not keep our eyes on Christ? How can we hold steady and maintain mental and moral equilibrium, if we do not look tip?—Selected. 28. Gracious Response “ This poor man cried, and the Lord heard .him, and saved him out o f all his troubles” (Psa. 34:6). What had been this man’s peculiar burden? It is described under the spacious word “ troubles.” . . . It is sufficient to us to know that the man was at bay, and could discover no means o f escape. In his straits he “ cried unto the Lord.” . . . “The Lord heard him,” paid heed to him, and began the ministry o f gracious re sponse. “He saved him out of all his troubles.” He opened a way out of the tight place. He led him out of straits into freedom. He gave him a sense of space.' “Thou hast brought my feet into a large place.” —J. H. Jowett. 29. Worldliness or Godliness “I f any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). No believer can be absorbed in Godliness and at the same time en grossed in worldliness. He w ill see that some things divide attention, di vert affection, and make spiritual duties and delights distasteful; and he w ill naturally turn from them. Godly people are always conspicuous fo r faith, fo r simple faith. They be gin by the simple receiving from Him of salvation; then they advance a stage further, and learn the secret o.f reckoning on Him fo r all He prom ises; and then they find it easy to advance to the point o f risking every thing fo r Him, whom they find can be reckoned to keep His word. —A. T. Pierson. 30. Trust “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord fo r ever: fo r in the

Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength” (Isa. 26:3, 4). I would trust Him in the shadow, I would trust Him in the light, I would cast on Him my burdens, Waik by faith and not by sight. He invites my full surrender, He my Guide and Stay would be, I can trust in Him to keep His own Through all time and eternity! —W ill H. Houghton. 31. A Straight Course “But none of these things move me . . . so that I might finish my course with joy” (Acts 20:24). Against the background of a bril liant. Oriental sky is seen in bold outline the tall, straight, cylindrical trunk of the palm tree. It cannot be pressed or bound downward; though heavy weights be laid on it, it will not grow crooked. The more it is op pressed, the more it flourishes. Per pendicularity distinguishes the Chris tian. Angular, crooked, distorted lives are all about us, and in striking con trast should be that of the Christian. The persuasions of the worldly-wise, the temptations of the evil one, the gnawing grief, the frightful fangs of poverty and deprivation are not suffi cient to change the angle at which the Christian is poised. “ I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.”
