they want to consider. Deevy said that about 50 volunteers helped set up and run the Fair this year. “It’s the older generation that started this and we need the younger people to help carry it on,” Deevy said. “We’re trying to recognize the volunteers and make them feel appreciated so they’ll want to come back.” The Fair is a very popular community event every year. Deevy said afterwards that they had more than 2000 people attending the fair over the two days it ran. Some events were more well-attended than others, for instance the bingo game on Saturday that had 91 players despite only being the second time it was held. This year, the Fair featured a beer garden and an exhibition hall filled with displays of handcrafted goods and hand-grown produce. On Saturday, crowds were delighted by horse and cattle shows, the annual truck pull, horse-drawn wagon rides, an open-air country market, and live music by Shot of Whiskey and Roger Hamelin and Friends. On Sunday, the RAS hosted its annual brunch to thank the community for suppor- ting it throughout the year and for attending the Fair. It shone a spotlight on the many volunteers that made the fair happen and invited the crowd to enjoy one last day before it closed. Events proceeded throughout the day until the Fair was closed out with a concert by Fridge Full of Empties.
The Riceville Fair ran last weekend and delighted crowds with its many agricul- tural events. The Riceville Fair ran from August 25 to 27 and delighted residents with its wide array of events, booths, and food. The Fair is an annual event put on by the Riceville Agricultural Society (RAS) to foster a sense of community and promote local interest in farming. “We’re trying to promote agriculture be- cause agriculture is being lost,” said Sharon Deevy, volunteer fair director. “We’re trying to keep the beef and dairy shows just to keep agriculture as a part of the agricultural fair. The young people are the next generation of farmers, and we’re trying to spark their interest in the different kinds of farming we have around here.” The Fair is a collaborative effort between the Agricultural Society and a host of volunteers that come out every year to help. Any profit that the Fair makes beyond breaking even goes back into maintaining and improving the Fairgrounds, so the event depends on the volunteers that help from the goodness of their hearts. The Agri- cultural Society wants to keep admission reasonable and accessible for everyone, so raising the entrance fee isn’t something
