EASTERN ONTARIO’S TOUGHEST RACE IS BACK IN FULL FORCE

Following a pause through the COVID pandemic and the 2022 windstorm that destroyed much of the course’s loca- tion, the Coureurs des Bois Challenge obstacle course is back, and organizers have pulled out all the stops for the bravest adventurers of Eastern Ontario. First organized by Chantal Lalonde to raise funds for a local Girl Scouts troupe in 2016, the Coureurs des Bois race has taken on a whole new look for its fifth edition with new obstacles, challenges and entertainment for participants and audience members. Newly appointed president Jean-Fran- çois Bélisle, formerly vice-president of the organizing committee since the race’s first edition, said he has been working with the committee and a core group of volunteers to make sure the race’s first year back is a fresh experience for everyone. “It’s kind of like starting all over again for us,” said Bélisle. Throughout the pandemic, the team set up a series of exercises the race community could do on their own along the paths in Bourget’s Lavigne Nature Park, where the race is normally held. Though that was an appreciated substitute, Belisle knows the avid racers are looking forward to the real thing. “People really enjoyed that,” said Bélisle. “But, in talking with some of the racers, I know they really missed the actual obstacles.

So, they’re looking forward to a real race with real obstacles.” To welcome them back, the team of 15 or so volunteers has reorganized the course and are adding in some new challenges as they build the course over the next few weekends to get ready for the September 30 race day. “We have three new obstacles this year,” Bélisle said. “It’s going to be a surprise for the racers when they get there, but they’ll definitely notice a difference.” Bélisle said the team knows not to expect the same turnout as they did in 2019 as they
rebuild the race’s visibility post-pandemic. “Our mentality is we are starting from scratch, and we are hoping to get the same support we got from the first year.” Over the last four races, the Coureurs des Bois Challenge has raised more than $70,000 for local causes that support phy- sical activity and helping people experience the outdoors. Bélisle hopes they can match the participation from 2016, which saw more than 1000 people take part. The team has also organized more prizes for all participants, not just those registered in the Elite group like in past years. This year,
local businesses have donated a range of gifts like stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and gift cards to be part of a draw, giving every racer a chance to come away with some goodies. Along with local kiosks and live music on race day, local comic Jonathan Dion will be emceeing the event. Registration is open for those looking to test their abilities, and organizers continue to accept donations and volunteers. Ottawa- based Cascade will now be responsible to recyclable collection in Alfred-Plantagenet as part of its regional operation. The provincial government’s new setup means a potential loss of revenue for some garbage contractors. They have less material to collect, which can mean a lower contract rate with their municipal clients. Contractors have to balance their operation expenses, including gasoline or diesel for their trucks and staff wages, compared to the amount of time needed to cover some areas that would be part of their contract. Recycle Action handled collection of recyclables in the township. The company provided employment and job training at its Hawkesbury sorting facility for people XIPIBWFEJGàDVMUZàOEJOHFNQMPZNFOU/PX Recycle Action is looking at reducing its operation and staff because of the provin- cial government’s new producer-responsible recycling plan for Ontario. 8IJMFXBJUJOHGPSSFTVMUTPOJUTTFDPOE attempt to get bids on a new garbage collec- tion contract, township administration is also looking at other options for the municipality. One possibility may be for the township itself to manage garbage collection. During a later phone interview, Chief Administrator Michel Potvin noted that township staff would first need to determine the legal and financial responsibilities involved, including whether the township would need to purchase its own collection trucks.
Alfred-Plantagenet Township may have to start handling its own garbage col- lection again. The township has received no offers for next year’s garbage collection contract. Jona- than Gendron, director for building, planning, engineering and environment, told council during its August 15 session that the original bidding process for the new contract closed June 9 with not a single contractor submitting a proposal. The township needs to have either a new contract or a plan in place for municipal garbage collection next spring. Administration reissued the proposal call for bids on the contract with August 25 as the submission deadline. Council will receive a report on the results at its next meeting in September. “That’s all I care about,” he said. “If you do that, you give yourself a good opportunity to make the dance.” Nats general manager Carl Robillard, who joined took on the role and head coach position in December 2022, said the boys have already taken to Pereira, signaling they feel lucky to have someone as high caliber as the former OHL coach. “He dedicated his life to coaching. This is what he wants to do and it shows,” said Robillard. The general manager’s hopes are also high for the upcoming season. With a new roster of players, five staying from last year, and a new coaching staff, Robillard said all the pieces are in place. “All that’s left to do is get these guys to gel.” Slow start to the pre-season In their first exhibition game against the Nepean Raiders the Nats took a 2-1 loss in overtime at home, a team they defeated three of their five meetings last season. The Nats played the Raiders again in Nepean on Wednesday, after the Vision went to print. According to their new coach, despite the pre-season jitters, the players are taking well to the message and developing the skills Pereira wants to see them carry throughout the regular season.
Pereira said he is bringing in a new system for the Nats, who missed the playoffs by just a few points last season and landed near the bottom of the table despite a confident start to the season. Pereira joined the Nats in May from the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit where he worked as an assistant coach. Now a head coach, he is preaching a similar message to what got the Spirit through to the second round of the playoffs last season. He wants to see a team that is possession-based, high-paced and highly competitive. “It’s about being relentless,” said Pereira. “Being relentless in everything you do. In your 50-50 battles, in how you’re hunting down pucks. It’s second and third efforts in battles.” For the season ahead, Pereira said the club is developing a culture around the team that extends to the surrounding community as well. “At the end of the day we want a team culture that is all about caring,” he said. “Caring for each other and caring about how we represent the community.” With his eyes set on a higher position in the standings for the upcoming season, Pereira is taking it one day at time and ensuring his team is growing and getting better every week.
“We’ve definitely seen those habits in a lot of the players,” said Pereira. “We obviously want to continue like that, continue with the consistency of our message and hopefully that translates into our performance.” Regardless, Pereira and Robillard said Rocklanders can rest assured that hockey in the city will undoubtedly be entertaining this year. “It’s going to be an exciting team to come watch every single night,” said Pereira. “It’s going to be a team that’s going to give 101 per cent effort. It’s going to be a fun product on the ice and a chance for these young men to showcase their skills.” The Nats’ regular season games begin September 15 at home against the Pem- broke Lumber Kings, last season’s overall last-place team in the CCHL with a record of 10-40-2-3. The Nats, who finished the 2022-2023 season at 20-23-4-8, defeated the Lumber Kings in all four of their games last year. Pre-season games against Hawkesbury are scheduled for September 8 and 10, away and at home, respectively. Their final pre-season matchup is against the Ottawa Junior Senators, the reigning two-time CCHL Bogart Cup champions, in Orléans on Sep- tember 13.

Très jeune, il démontrait déjà ces qualités qui ont fait de lui une source d’inspiration non seulement au pays, mais partout dans le monde. Vous avez peut-être déjà participé à La Journée Terry Fox ou à La Journée Terry Fox des écoles, ou peut-être est-ce nouveau pour vous. Quel que soit votre niveau de participation antérieur, vous avez aujourd’hui l’occasion de montrer ce qui vous habite en vous joignant au mouvement. Notre prochaine génération d’élèves sera celle qui poursuivra le combat de Terry et qui fera progresser cette noble cause vers la réalisation du rêve du jeune athlète, soit un monde débarrassé du cancer.

Both Alfred-Plantagenet Township and Hawkesury council voted to support for the Clarence-Rockland resolution. – Gregg Chamberlain RÉVISION DU BUDGET Le budget 2023 du canton d’Alfred- Plantagenet fait l’objet de quelques révisions. Certains départements auront des fonds supplémentaires alloués à partir des fonds de réserve, en raison de dépenses supplémentaires au cours de l’année jusqu’à présent. D’autres départements pourraient obtenir un financement de soutien supplémen- taire de la part des gouvernements supérieurs pour certains projets et programmes. Les révisions n’affecteront pas les taux d’imposition foncière de 2023, ni les factures d’impôt foncier déjà envoyées aux entreprises et aux propriétaires . – Gregg Chamberlain

Marc et Linda Pilon collectent les patins déjà aimés dans leur entreprise d’affûtage de patins afin de lancer un programme de location gratuite de patins pour ceux qui souhaitent passer du temps sur la glace. Anciennement connu sous le nom de Final Pass Pro Shop, SHARPSK8S a tenu sa grande ouverture, bien qu’il ait officiellement ouvert l’année dernière, pour son emplace- ment dans l’aréna de Clarence-Rockland le samedi 2 septembre. Alors qu’ils offraient des prix et un affû- tage de patins à 5 $, les Pilon recueillaient également des patins usagés dans le cadre de leur programme Skate Share. L’entreprise veut prêter gratuitement des paires de patins à ceux qui veulent patiner pendant les heures de patinage public de l’aréna. Pour les Pilon, c’est l’occasion de donner à quelqu’un la chance de tomber amoureux du patinage. « La communauté du hockey et la com- munauté dans son ensemble sont très reconnaissantes de notre présence dans la patinoire, a dit Marc. Je veux simplement rendre la pareille et c›est une façon de le faire. » Au cours de la fin de semaine, neuf paires de patins ont été collectées et plusieurs autres personnes se sont engagées à apporter leurs vieilles paires. Le magasin a également installé une boîte de dépôt à l’extérieur du magasin pour que les patins puissent être déposés en dehors des heures d›ouverture. Les patins à glace de loisir peuvent coûter des centaines d’euros, voire plus, ce qui empêche de nombreuses personnes de pratiquer des sports de glace. Marc et Linda espèrent remédier à cette situation à leur
