The Youth Group Experiences That Shaped My Teenage Years CAMPING IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL A ug. 1 marked the 112th anniversary of the first ever backgrounds and tested his ideas for a book he was authoring on Scouting in the local area. Much like the activities of the Scouts today, the daily lessons at this first camp were centered around camping, observation, woodcraft, chivalry, lifesaving, and patriotism. Thinking about the importance of Baden- Powell’s endeavor to teach youth all over the world about thriving in the natural world all those years ago, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic for all the summers I spent at camp as a kid. organized Scout camp. Back in 1907, Lieutenant-General Baden-Powell gathered 20 boys from all different social
And I was right! I loved the camp so much that I ventured there every year until I graduated high school. Even now, the memories of playing camp games, trading scary ghost stories before bed with my tent mates, and making only the most delicious s’mores around the campfire fill my mind whenever summer rolls around. It made for some of the best (and even educational) experiences of my life. When I close my eyes and really try, it feels like I can actually smell the roasted, golden marshmallows. Fortunately, I’m still able to enjoy the camp in all the same ways I did as a kid now by going back as a youth leader. I love getting to see how the camp positively impacts the young campers, just as it did for me while I was growing up. As youth leaders, not only are we bringing the campers closer in faith, but we are also teaching them valuable life skills. Regardless of background, I think most people would agree that your teenage years bring about the most emotional, spiritual, and mental hardship. Our current world is complex for an adult to navigate, let alone a teen, and nothing makes me more appreciative of this camp than getting to build relationships with these kids during such a pivotal time in their lives. The happiness this camp brings to today’s youth makes all the difference to me, and I can’t wait to see what this year holds!
“Even now, the memories of playing camp games, trading scary ghost stories before bed with my tent mates, and making only the most delicious s’mores around the campfire fill my mind whenever summer rolls around.”
While the camp that I went to each summer wasn’t a designated Scout camp, it was equally as informative and memorable. Every year, all of us who were a part of The Church of Latter-day Saints High Adventure youth group would pack up all the belongings we’d need for weeks for living outdoors, load up into a bus, and make the journey to southern Utah for some quality time spent with nature. The first time I attended this camp, I was 10. I remember setting foot off the bus for the first time and taking in the rocky red terrain, the sparse arches over trees, and the vast desert landscape that seemed to stretch on for miles. While the weather was certainly warm, it was inviting and without all the extra city lights, noises, and people, I immediately knew this was a place I was going to love.

The Best Meal of the Day
3 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR NEXT BREAKFAST YOUR BEST BREAKFAST!
THE CRISPIEST BACON Cooking bacon can be a messy chore with a lot of cleanup. If you want to avoid this — and still end up with delicious bacon — start cooking bacon in the oven. All you need is a baking tray and a wire rack that fits in the tray. Start by heating your oven to 350 F. While it heats, line the tray with foil, insert the rack, and lay the bacon over the rack. Cook the bacon for about 15 minutes. Keep an eye on it after about the 10-minute mark to check for your ideal doneness. If you want meatier bacon, take it out just as it starts to brown evenly. If you want crispy bacon, give it a few more minutes. Using this method, the bacon is perfectly cooked, and you have no grease splatters to clean up! THE FLUFFIEST PANCAKES Say goodbye to packaged pancake mix, because if you want the best results, you need to start from scratch. The recipe you’ll want to use comes from The Kitchn. The recipe is Lofty Buttermilk Pancakes. Take care to note that the yolks and whites of the eggs are incorporated separately into the batter; the result is an incredibly fluffy pancake. Here’s another secret: This method of separating the yolk and whites can be applied to almost any pancake recipe. Just be sure to follow the Lofty Buttermilk Pancake recipe method for consistent results.
Breakfast is the meal that fuels your brain and body for the day ahead, so why not make it the
best meal of the day? There are simple tweaks that can make your home-cooked breakfast
the best breakfast you’ve ever had. Put away the cereal and bust out the skillet because things are about to get truly delicious. Read on! THE SILKIEST SCRAMBLED EGGS There are many methods for achieving great scrambled eggs, but how does one create the best eggs? The secret is air. In the words of Bob Ross, you have to “beat the devil out of ’em.” Start by cracking a few eggs into a bowl (and add a pinch of salt and pepper, if desired). With a whisk, beat them until smooth. The eggs should start to look light and airy. Then, pour the eggs into a skillet set to medium-low heat . Continue to whisk for a few more seconds. Then, with a spatula, turn the eggs as they begin to curdle. They are done the instant no runny liquid remains. Quickly remove them from heat when they look just underdone and still moist. 100 Deadliest Days of Summer & Personal Injury
While the warmer months are typically synonymous with fun and relaxation or gathering around a mouthwatering barbecue, they’re also known by those who study accidents on roadways as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer.” These days refer to the period of time that stretches between Memorial Day and Labor Day when the number of vehicle fatalities involving teen drivers reaches a tragic peak. Because our attorneys here at Jorgensen Law have worked very closely with clients who have suffered accidents of their own, we understand the personal and familial trauma that often occurs after a crash. So, we want to point out some of the behaviors that can lead to distracted driving, especially for teens. BEHAVIOR NO. 1: DIGITAL DISTRACTION According to the AAA Foundation’s latest Traffic Safety Culture Index report,
52% of teen drivers have read a text message or email while driving in the past 30 days. While law enforcement struggles to accurately detect the number of crashes resulting from driving and texting, additional research from the AAA report using in-vehicle dashcam videos of teen driver crashes found distraction was involved in 58% of teen crashes, approximately four times as many as federal estimates. BEHAVIOR NO. 2: IGNORING THE SPEEDOMETER While speeding is generally regarded as a nationwide bad habit, teens seem to be just as susceptible to disregarding traffic signs as adults are. The AAA report determined that 49.7% of teen drivers reported speeding in residential and public roadways within their last month of driving. Since speeding increases the severity of a crash should it occur, all drivers (especially teens) should avoid it all costs.
BEHAVIOR NO. 3: FILLING THE CAR Since kids are out of school for the summer, they have more free time to spend their days adventuring together. But studies show that when a teen driver has more than one passenger in the car, their ability to focus on the road wavers. While there will certainly be instances where piling in several passengers will be necessary, encourage your child to only travel with a few friends when possible. Because our personal injury attorneys work closely with clients who have been in accidents, we understand the pain, frustration, and stress following an accident, and we want to be there to help. END FALL LEAVES
If you’ve applied for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), then your claim was sent to a state agency called Disability Determination Services (DDS). In many cases, the DDS will follow up with a request for a consultative examination, otherwise known as a CE exam. These exams are performed by an independent medical doctor who has been contracted by the Social Security Administration.

If you have received a CE exam request, don’t panic. In most cases, the Disability Determination examiner feels that the medical records you provided weren’t recent enough or don’t address all the symptoms listed on your original application. So, if you receive this request, make sure you make it to your appointment, as not going to a Social Security medical exam can result in a case denial for failure to cooperate. WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT DURING THE EXAM The physicians who perform these exams are not employees of the SSA or DDS. They are asked to provide an updated record of a claimant’s medical condition, especially if it looks like the claimant has not been to a doctor recently. Occasionally, a claimant may simply be sent for a radiological exam (like an X-ray), but even then, these exams are usually quite short. Remember that while these doctors are accustomed to evaluating disability applicants, they will not be looking to treat any of your ailments. These exams aren’t as stressful as they seem, but your best chance of winning your disability claim is to assemble detailed medical records before submitting your application. If you need help gathering all the necessary documentation for your claim or if your claim was denied, give our office a call immediately! This Ain’t Motel 6! AMERICA’S WEIRDEST AIRBNBS
W hen Airbnb was founded a little over a decade ago, the developers hoped to provide an alternative to traditional travel accommodations. Today, with annual revenue in the billions, the service is an industry unto itself. While most people use Airbnb to “live like a local” while traveling, you can find some truly wacky lodging options if you spend some time searching the platform. Here are just a few of the many contenders for the title of “Weirdest Airbnb in the U.S.” For ease of searching, the listings here have the same titles as they do on Airbnb.
with modern amenities like Wi-Fi and in-home laundry. It’s a truly unique living space surrounded by pristine nature and not far from the historic Taos Pueblo. MANCAVE APARTMENT/AIRPLANE HANGAR Geneva, Florida Airbnb super hosts Dan and Deborah have no shortage of quirky properties for rent — including yurts and treehouses — but their apartment fashioned out of an airplane hangar surely takes the cake. You’d be forgiven for thinking it was a theme restaurant featuring eclectic aviation. Memorabilia lines the walls with a bar front and center, and the bed is in a loft high above the ground. DOG BARK PARK INN B&B Cottonwood, Idaho As you approach the Dog Bark Park Inn, you won’t have to guess if you’re in the right place. After all, how many buildings are shaped like beagles? When describing the space on Airbnb, the hosts make no bones about who this rental is aimed for. “Stay in a giant dog!” they say. In addition to being inside a massive wooden dog, you’ll find canine-themed games, books, and more. Talk about ruffing it.
BRAND NEW STUDIO EARTHSHIP Taos, New Mexico
Earthships, houses run by clean energy and featuring reused materials, are a fixture of the Taos area. This one, which looks almost like a crashing wave with a living space in its undertow, combines the rustic charm of truly getting away from it all
