their arrangements live onstage in under 60 minutes on Saturday 10 August at 1pm. The Horticultural Display exhibits will also brighten up the precinct, with stunning entries by community groups, clubs and associations. Meanwhile, an awards presentation for the school competitions will take place on Saturday 10 August at 11.30am. The fun Little Sprouts Competition will see Prep to Year 1 students grow an Ekka-pillar, while the School Garden Competition will see students from Prep to Year 6 design their own mini-farm, complete with pretend crops and animals. Kindergarten and primary school students entering the School Scarecrow Competition will this year seek inspiration from Banjo Patterson and his iconic Jolly Swagman from Waltzing Matilda. The winner will be announced on Saturday 10 August. The champion scarecrow will then assume official scarecrow duties in the grounds of Government House for up to three months. The Little Sprouts Competition supported by Brunnings challenges students to create a grass caterpillar which is completely biodegradable. Students can also participate in the School Garden Competition supported by Brunnings, by designing and growing a mini farm for display during the Ekka. n School Garden Competition supported by Brunnings n School Scarecrow Competition supported by Brunnings The Floristry competition has stepped up a notch this year with an additional $1250 in prize money, contributing to the total of $3050 up for grabs. Two classes where entrants can vie for part of the increased prize pool include Flowers for Cows, where exhibitors are to make a floral garland to adorn a cow, and the Flower Beard competition. Flowers for Cows entries will be constructed live onstage from 12pm to 1pm on Tuesday 13 August, after which they will remain on display through to Sunday 18 August. ABC’s Gardening Australia presenter Costa Georgiadis and Julia Rose from Flowers by Julia Rose will host the Flower Beards competition live onstage with entrants to complete their design within 60 minutes before the bearded models display their arrangement in the Main Arena’s Grand Parade at 1.30pm. Exhibitors for the other Floristry classes are called to channel their inner fashionista with this year’s theme of ‘Australian Bush Catwalk Fashion Show’, requiring exhibitors to enter arrangements for to be placed on the catwalk or table arrangements for the opening of the fashion show.
