Getting To Know The Eastern Shore PT Staff MARTINWEINSTEIN, PT, MPT, COMT

Martin is originally from Bowie, MD but has been living on the Eastern Shore since 1988. Martin received his Bachelors of Science in Marketing from Salisbury University in 1991. Upon graduating from college, Martin continued to pursue his goal of owning his own business by completing his prerequisite courses for physical therapy school in addition to taking further entrepreneurship classes to assist him with business planning. While at Salisbury University, Martin met his wife, Kathleen, who also had aspirations to be a physical therapist. Martin attended University of Maryland at Baltimore and earned his Masters of Physical Therapy degree in 1997. After receiving his physical therapy degree, Martin returned back to the Ocean City area because he had always had a love for the beach and enjoyed the close knit community the area had to offer. Martin’s first job as a physical therapist was at Chesapeake Rehabilitation Hospital in 1997 in which he worked with inpatients who had diagnoses of strokes, brain injuries, Parkinson’s, total hip and knee replacements and amputees. From 1998-2000, Martin began his career in outpatient physical therapy at HealthSouth Sports Medicine in Salisbury, MD in which he treated a wide variety of outpatient orthopedic patients. In 2000, Martin opened the HealthSouth Outpatient Center in Berlin, MD and he was the manager

of that facility for 3 years. After receiving extensive training inmanual therapy techniques fromMichigan State University’s Osteopathic Manual Medicine School, Martin and Kathleen decided to open up their own facility. Eastern Shore Physical Therapy was opened in 2003 so that superior one on one physical therapy could be offered to our local community. Presently, Martin is the only Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMT) in the area that has given him the superior skills to treat patients with a variety of back, neck and sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunctions. In the spring of 2014, Martin completed his second level of extensive and comprehensive manual therapy training under the instruction of internationally renowned manual therapist Jim Meadows.

Mechanical Neck Pain Mechanical pain usually starts from changes in the neck joints. As discs start to collapse, the space between theneckbones narrows, and the joints may become inflamed. The pain is usually chronic and is typically felt in the middle part of the neck. However, itmayspread from theneck into theupperbackor to the outside of the shoulder in some cases. Radiculopathy Pressure or irritation on or around the nerves of the neck can affect the nerves’ electrical signals. The pressure or irritation can be felt as numbness on the skin, weakness in the muscles or pain along the path of the nerve. Weakness in the spine muscles can cause abnormal pressure on the nerves and increased chance of radiculopathy. Discussing Neck Pain with Martin Weinstein PT, MPT, COMT and Kathleen Weinstein PT, DPT.

Dear Valued Client,

Neck pain can be a constant ache or sharp pain with movement, stoppingyoufromenjoying life’sactivities. Neck pain is very common affecting approximately two thirds of the population at one point or another. People with neck pain suffer mainly from one of the following conditions: Degenerative Disc Disease The discs are the fluid filled sacs between the bones of your neck. The normal aging process shrinks the discsanddries themout.Repeatedstressandstrain also weakens the tissues that make up a disc. When thishappens, thedisc loses itsabilitytoabsorbshock. In turn, thiscauses rubbingandchanges in theshape of the joints in your neck, which can be painful. Muscle Strain When there is an injury to the neck or you overuse the shoulder and neck muscles, a strain can occur.

ARE YOU HURTING YOUR NECKWHILE YOU SLEEP? We spend one third of our lives sleeping. Therefore, how you sleep and the bed you sleep on can have a dramatic effect on the support of your body. When you sleep you need to be aware of how your neck and spine are supported. There are many different types of beds on the market today which can be very confusing for consumers. The best type of bed is the one thatyou tryoutand feelmostcomfortableusing.Typically, abed that isfirm underneath, with a softer top helps to provide support as well as contour your body. If your mattress is old, then think about investing in a new one so that your neck and spine are supported well.

Ethel Pitts started coming to Eastern Shore Physical Therapy over 10 years ago. She and her husband Tom told me her goal was to walk down the aisle at her church. At the time Ethel was in a wheelchair and had bilateral below knee amputations with prostheses and she had a difficult time just standing. We continued to work on various balance and strengthening exercises with Ethel in 2006. She was beginning to be able to walk about 25 feet with a rolling walker and assistance from a therapist. She was also on the waiting list for a new kidney and both her andTomwere waiting anxiously for the call any day. The time came for us to schedule the walk down the aisle at church as Ethel was able to walk the required 100 feet with a walker and minimal assistance. Then a couple days before the scheduled walkTom and Ethel got the call and Ethel was rushed to the hospital in Baltimore and received her new kidney. After that we did not see Ethel for years as she recovered from her surgery. This year Ethel returned to therapy and had the same goal from over 10 years Ethel was able to walk the required 100 feet with a walker and minimal assistance! The best positions to sleep in for your spine are on your back or sides. Avoid sleeping on your stomach since your spine ends up twisted, especially your neck.Over thehoursof repetitivesleepingonyourstomach, youcandamage the joints of your spine and compress the nerves exiting your spine. Use a pillow to help support your body and take the weight of your legs off your spine. Ifyou like tosleeponyourback, placeapillowunder thebacksofyour thighs and knees. This should place your knees in a slight, supported bend which takes pressure off your lower back. If you sleep on your side, be sure to put a pillow between your knees. This helps keep the alignment of your spine, and takes the pressure of your upper leg off the spine. Have 1-2 pillows under your head to keep your neck in proper alignment. If you need 2 pillows stagger them so that one pillow overlaps the other by one half. The lower half goes under the shoulders, while the upper half supports the neck. Our physical therapists at Eastern Shore Physical Therapy can show you exercises, stretches and techniques to relieve your pain and prevent it from returning.

If you are suffering with neck or back pain, call us today to learn more about how we can relieve your pain, returning you to a more active, pain-free life!
