To: Central Washington University Board of Trustees From: Faculty Senate Executive Committee Date: October 9, 2026 Subject: Quarterly Update to the Board
The Faculty Senate Executive Committee (FSEC) submits this report to provide an update on the work of the Faculty Senate since the last regular Board meeting in July 2026. The Faculty Senate is a representative, deliberative body of 50 Senators representing 39 academic departments and units and over 500 faculty members.
Executive Summary
We appreciate the opportunity to continue to provide a report at Board meetings and engage in dialogue with the Board about issues impacting faculty and academic integrity. In this report, we provide an overview of the planned work of Faculty Senate committees this year, including details related to three-year degrees, general education, and college in the high school, which we know are of interest to the Board. We then outline a number of items we would like the Board to be aware of: - We are concerned about a potential change to CWU policy related to the Board’s power and duties regarding presidential evaluation (CWU 101-05). We ask that you please consider our concerns as you deliberate on this policy change. - We submitted a public comment to the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) to register several areas related to university governance where we fear CWU is not meeting accreditation standards. - We are concerned about the recent Board communication related to both consultants, especially the implications that Dr. Bahls’ work will necessitate revisions to the Faculty Code and the lack of transparency around what Ms. Crosslin has been contracted to do and on what timeline. - We are disappointed about the Board’s summer decision to not pass changes to the Faculty Code. - We want the Board to be informed about an ongoing and unresolved issue related to remote work and international work policy that is negatively impacting faculty and students. Overall, we want to affirm our investment in the future of CWU and our commitment to engaging as an active participant in shared governance to ensure the best outcomes for CWU students, faculty, and staff.
