CORNWALL | The colorful establishment that houses Big Brothers Big Sisters is a haven for several kids around town. Yet something has executive director Aman- da Brisson worried. “If we compare the amount of male vol- unteers we had back in 1973, the year we were founded, we had 125 big broth- ers, compared to 15 this year”, she said. The sharp decrease has been felt by the kid population attending BBBS, but more importantly by boys. “It’s sad to say, but girls have to wait five to six months for a big sister, whereas boys have to wait one to two years”, Brisson said. Several factors have contributed to the decrease of male interest in the cause, such as a stigma which, accord- ing to Brisson, is primarily made up by the male population themselves. “For some reason, potential big broth- ers don’t see themselves as being ca- pable of taking care of a child”, she said. “But the truth is these boys simply need a fatherly figure in their life, that’s why they’re here. Who is going to show them how to change the oil in their car or to work in carpentry?” Brisson added. The screening process for vol- unteers has changed a lot, since the organization’s creation in 1973. “Younowneedapolicecheckbeforeyoucan become a big brother or big sister” she said. Volunteers are also asked to participate in an in-depth interview as well as in child safe- ty training, both physical and psychological. “We really want to know our po- tential big brothers and big sis- ters” Brisson said with a smile. The BBBS headquarters, located on Third St. West, has had its outside given a breath of fresh air in the past two years and is now easily the most recognizable building in Cornwall. The many colors adorning the building were painted by artists from across Canada and the United States. This coincides

Annual Charity Golf Tournament date announced
“When we started doing this, the tour- nament was 90% comprised of golfers and businesses from Ottawa” said Tournament Chair Kirk Wrinn. “We are thrilled by the interest that the local participants and businesses have show in coming in board and growing the event. We appreciate the support”. Master of ceremonies Graham Greer will be returning for a second year, following in the footsteps of past MC’s Lianne Lang and Wayne Ronstad. “This year’s tournament is of particular importance to us, as we have recently ope- ned an office in Cornwall,” explains Wrinn. Local individuals and businesses can still take part by registering a foursome for tournament play, sponsoring a hole, providing a prize or silent auction item ,or making an outside donation to the CHEO Foundation. Individual golfers and dona- tions are also welcome! For more informa- tion, email patrickmacdonald@mwfg.ca or call 613-703-0266.
