IN MEMORY OF BINGO

hold my breath until he was right on top of me, then jump out and scared him. Oh, what fun! He’d race around me in circles and bark and laugh. He seemed to say, “You got me good!” But he always knew I was there, playing a game. He trusted me and Alison and Audriana. He knew we would always be there to feed him, pick a thorn from his foot, and stroke his little soft head to sleep. He lived in a world of complete trust. “People Are Basically Good and Friendly.” Everyone Bingo met was happy to see him. He was always the center of the universe, and that universe was good. Even my mother-in-law, who is afraid of dogs, loved Bingo! When Bingo came to church with me, he loved nothing more than to run around and greet everyone during coffee hour. The “Parish Pup” always knew who would have treats. Of course, they would make him work for those treats first. He’d perform his many tricks, responding to commands like “sit,” “roll over,” and “BANG!” If you said that last command, he’d pretend to get shot, drop to the ground, and play dead. Bingo loved a crowd and was always a showoff. Everyone was softened by his big brown eyes. When we would visit my neighbor, George, in the convalescent home, he stopped for every new friend along the way and made them smile and feel loved. I am glad to know George is in heaven to greet Bingo, because that old curmudgeon loved that dog. Continued on page 3 ...

With great sadness, I must tell you that Bingo has passed away. Eighteen months ago, when the vet diagnosed him with prostate cancer, Bingo was given just a few weeks to live. I firmly believe it was all the love and prayers he received that kept him going strong for so very long. Even at the end, when we said our final teary goodbyes, the doctor listened through her stethoscope and remarked how strong his heart was. Over the last 10 years, Bingo and his amazing heart taught me so many wonderful things. Today, I would like to remember my beloved Bingo by sharing with you some of what he taught our family. “It’s Okay to Trust.” One of Bingo’s special qualities was that I could trust him. Whether we were walking off leash through the woods or around the block, I trusted him to behave with dignity and self-control. He never lunged at other dogs or jumped on people we came across. He was self-assured and minded his own business. He might get 30–40 feet ahead of me, exploring the world, but then he would stop, look back, and make eye contact with me, just to check. “Are you coming, Daddy?” Yup, I’m right behind you. I tested him occasionally. He’d get far ahead and I would hide behind a big tree. When he’d stop to look around, I would watch him from my hiding place as he waited for me to appear on the path. If I didn’t appear soon, he’d backtrack to look for me. I’d wait and

The Life- Giving Benefits of Saunas

good and warming you up weren’t enough, a healthy mind is a great reason to sauna.

Colder weather is hard on our bodies for many reasons. The air dries and cracks our skin, freezing temperatures cause old injuries to flare up and joints to ache, and the conditions make it just plain hard to exercise. What’s a fair-weather bird to do? Head to the sauna! Sauna use has been popular in Finland for thousands of years, and there are compelling reasons why. Not only are there many bodily benefits, but science is telling us it may also protect the mind. We’ve known for a long time that saunas can help with blood circulation, stress relief, and cardiovascular health. Traditional saunas use heat to get your blood flowing and promote circulation, and the sweating that goes on during a sauna experience is said to purge toxins from your body. It’s a rejuvenating ritual that releases stress along with endorphins. Now, the health journal Age and Ageing has found evidence linking sauna use to a lowered risk for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Men aged 42–60 who participated in frequent sauna bathing sessions were found to have lowered rates of dementia and Alzheimer’s. If feeling

And while the simplicity of the traditional sauna is part of what makes it great, some facilities have added a modern twist: infrared rays. Infrared saunas, already hot in New York City and Los Angeles, are starting to pop up everywhere. If you have trouble dealing with the heat of a typical sauna (average sauna temperatures are kept around 212 degrees F), this latest trend is for you. The average temperature of an infrared sauna is 150 degrees F, making it a more tolerable experience. One New York studio touts infrared’s ability to stimulate collagen production, an added anti- aging benefit. Need another bonus? Infrared saunas are said to release up to 20 percent more toxins from the body than traditional saunas. Whichever type of sauna you decide to visit, the potential health benefits speak for themselves. If you don’t get to escape to Miami or Cancun this winter (and even if you do), it’s a relaxing way to warm up and ease winter ailments. Treat your body and yourself to a sauna experience!

“Stop and Smell the Roses … And the Bushes and the Weeds.” A dog’s nose is a thousand times more sensitive than a human’s. I wonder what a vibrant, aromatic world Bingo lived in. He never hurried; he lived only in the present. I wish we could all forget about the past and stop worrying about the future. There are so many interesting and wonderful experiences to be enjoyed, right at the tip of our noses. For years, our voicemail message has closed with the advice, “Enjoy today for the gift that it is.” Bingo was my example. Live life with no worries, no fear, and with a great big heart and a wet nose. We are heartbroken with his passing and grateful for his lasting impact on our family. He was our first dog ever for all of our family. Bingo was meant to be, and he’ll stay in our hearts always.

Iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons

Iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons

follow. Sadly, the original balloon got tangled in wires and caught on fire, so it has been lost to history. Felix’s influence on the parade is so immense, however, that when Macy’s brought him back in 2016 for the parade’s 90th anniversary, they recreated his original design. Without Felix’s debut, the parade might look a lot different today. Snoopy When it comes to balloon characters, none is more famous than the classic “Peanuts” beagle. His first balloon floated through the sky in 1968, and he’s been a regular fixture ever since. Charles Schultz’s famous pooch holds the record for most variations in a parade (eight) and most total appearances (40). Though Snoopy doesn’t come out every year, he usually closes the show when he does. Pikachu The Pokémon mascot didn’t appear until 2001, but he’s become a star attraction, showing up every year since. Bright, expressive, and impossible to miss, Pikachu checks off all the boxes for a successful balloon character. For 16 years, those who predicted that Pokémon was just a fad have gotten a big, yellow reminder of just how wrong they were.

Thanksgiving is a holiday full of traditions, from turkey and stuffing to football and naps. Since 1924, the Macy’s Parade has grown to become not only a Thanksgiving staple but also the world’s largest parade. Over 3.5 million people attended the parade last year, with another 20 million tuning in from home. The main attraction is always the massive character balloons, which first graced the skies in 1927. Over the decades, some of these balloons have become nearly as famous as the character they depict. Felix the Cat When the Felix the Cat balloon appeared in 1931, it set the standard for all characters to
