King's Business - 1951-01

Finally the month was up, and Mother told them of the surprise. “Your father said I might join him in the village for a few weeks,” she said, “and that I should bring with me all of you who could keep even one good resolution for a whole month. I am afraid that only one of you has really kept your resolution, though.” The children looked guiltily at each other, blushed, and looked down at the floor. “Jim,” went on Mother, “ you re solved to keep wood in the woodbox for the fire. Thank you for being so thoughtful. You remembered it beauti fully for the first two weeks, but what has happened lately?” Jim hung his head. “ Nell, I was so happy when you stopped fussing with the rest of the family. Don’t go back to doing it again, will you, dear?”

(Continued, from Page 17) “ I can’t guess what resolution you have made—it seems almost as if you must have made a dozen,” said Mother. “ But I shall have to let you in on the surprise, you are keeping up better than any of the others.” Peggy laughed, and bent lower over the big hole in Tim’s sock. Peggy was keeping up better than the others. All had gone well with them for the first two weeks. Then the woodbox began to run low again, the quarrels began to happen again, with Nell at their center; the school books began to be less important in Tim’s routine for the evening; and little Georgie became more interested in playing with his toys than in “hep- pin’ Muvver.” Peggy was sorry because her broth ers and sister couldn’t keep their New Year’s resolutions, but she made up her mind harder than ever to keep hers.

Nell blushed again, and shook her dark curls emphatically. “ Tim, I’m proud of the good marks on your school work lately. Keep it up.” Tim nodded. Mother looked down at Georgie, sound asleep on her lap, and smiled. “ Peggy-^t” all the other children looked at Peggy, for none of them had been able to guess her resolution. “ I think your resolution must have been one like Georgie’s, and you have kept it very well. Did you resolve to be good?” Peggy shook her head. “ No.” “ I don’t see how you’ve kept at it, Peg,” growled Jim “ I really meant to be a lot different, but—but, I just couldn’t see how to do it.” “ I think the reason I have kept mine,” said Peggy, “ is that I knew I couldn’t do it all by myself; and I just resolved to ask the Lord Jesus every day to help me live for Him, and I promised Him that if He would show me, I would do my best to do all He said. And .He did—and I did,” she finished in confusion. Mother reached up and patted Peggy on the cheek. “You have taught us all a lesson, Peggy—and how proud your Daddy will be of your New Year’s resolution!” BIBLE QU IZ True and False 1.
