There were joisting, block paving, joinery, plumbing and electrical challenges with scores based on teamwork, accuracy and the quality of the completed task.” Pupils from Firhill High School in Edinburgh emerged triumphant at the end of a fantastic day of problem-solving and teamwork. Roughly 100 S2 pupils aged 13 to 14 competed in the final of the Construction & Built Environment Challenge (CABEC) at Edinburgh Corn Exchange, where they tackled construction, engineering and building services challenges. Schools in Edinburgh & the Lothians were invited to put forward a team of 10 pupils to compete in the event, which showcases to young people the many exciting careers that the construction industry provides. Speaking up for Scotland

In the run-up to the Scottish Parliamentary elections in May, FMB Scotland is promoting its Builders’ Manifesto . Launched in November at the Scottish Parliament, the manifesto sets out five key areas of action required by the Scottish Government to support local building companies. During Scottish Apprenticeship Week, Scotland Director Gordon Nelson visited members. “My thanks to members who hosted me at site visits and their apprentices who told me why they chose to pursue a career in the trades.”

SCOTLAND Scotland’s first meeting in 2026

FMB Scotland hosted its first board meeting of 2026 at Velux’s offices in Glenrothes, Fife, which pleased board member Ryan Fair who lives nearby. Fair said: “For a Glenrothes-based contractor, I was very happy to have our first meeting of 2026 right on my doorstep and chat with fellow members. We also invited Fife-based contractors to us for a tour of Velux’s showroom. Thanks to Velux for being a great host.”
