Master teacher Linda Hoyt knows exactly what educators need to teach the craft of writing. With Conventions and Craft , teachers receive 38 weeks of conventions instruction in sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and capitalization, word study, and general editing. Hoyt covers one concept, or “understanding,” each week in a five-day series of 10-minute “micro-workshops.” Over the five days, students see the understanding “in action” in a mentor text (a nonfiction book or magazine article) and in a piece of student writing, watch the teacher model how to apply the understanding in writing, and try out the understanding in their own writing.
