DESTROYED SIGNS: MAYOR BARTON SCOLDS VANDALS GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

He noted that he has re-set a few signs he found knocked over and he has received calls about other vandalized signs.

Mayor Barton is not running for re-elec- tion and didn’t mention whose signs were damaged.

Vandals have targeted election signage in other municipalities, like Clarence-Rockland, during the past few weeks of the official campaign period for the October 22 munici- pal election. In some cases, the candidates whose signs were damaged have opened complaint files with the OPP. Vandalism falls under Section 430 of the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC) and covers deliberate damage or destruction of any property or, in the cybernetic age, the deliberate erasure or alteration of computer data or use of viruses or malware to infect and interfere with computer programs and systems. Anyone found guilty of mischief could receive a fine or a jail term. The amount of the fine or the length of the jail term would depend on the damage value of the vandalism and other factors.

CHARGES LAID AFTER COLLISION WITH SCHOOL BUS A 51-year-old Toronto man has been charged with careless driving under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act after the tractor-trailer unit he was driving collided with the rear of a school bus. The accident occurred September 19 south of the Pleasant Corner Road intersec- tion near Vankleek Hill. Ambulance, fire and police units responded to the 9 a.m. call. Four children were taken to the Hawkes- bury and District General Hospital The school bus driver was transported by helicopter to an Ottawa hospital. All were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Other children also on board the bus were taken to the hospital for examination as a precautionary measure. The occupants of two other vehicles that were involved in the accident did not suffer injury. Police closed down Highway 34 between Hawkesbury and Vankleek Hill for the entire morning until early afternoon as part of their investigation. Members of the Prescott- Russell Victims Services agency attended at the Hawkesbury hospital to aid and support to the children and their parents and help them to deal with the situation. “It’s not your sign,” he said at the start of the September 11 council session. “I don’t know who you’re voting for. Keep your hands off the bloody signs.” GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Mayor Gary Barton had some stern words of advice for vandals making merry with election signs around Champlain Township.

Ne touchez pas aux affiches électorales ! C’est l’avertissement qu’a servi le maire du canton de Champlain, Gary Barton, aux vandales circulant qui endommagent ou déracinent les affiches de candidats aux élections municipales. —archives
