January is the month for fresh starts and challenging resolutions, and for 2020, our team has laid out an ambitious goal: When the Oregon Business Journal releases its 2020 ranking of Oregon’s best midsized companies to work for, we want to be in the No. 1 spot. For the last five years, TZ Medical has been rising steadily up the list, which splits 300 companies by size and then ranks them annually according to their company culture. The rankings are determined based on anonymous employee surveys, so it’s the satisfaction of our staff that has pushed us up the midsized company list from No. 62 five years ago to No. 2 in 2019. We’re incredibly proud of our company culture and have worked hard to create the positive, open, team-oriented environment that has propelled us into the No. 2 spot. That said, we know that we can do better. There are always additional steps to take for the health and happiness of our employees, and with that in mind, TZ owner Trent Tribou created the 100 Best Committee last year. In the months since its formation, it has made dozens of employee dreams a reality. “We formed the committee in 2019 with the goal of getting better each year,” Trent explains. “We invited one person from each department within the company to sit on the committee, and in March, we sat down with the entire company and went over the results of a survey we’d sent out asking for suggestions on improvement. Now, the committee meets each month, picks a suggestion or two, and tries to implement them to show teams that we’re listening to them and responding to their needs.” Lindsey Schaefer, a TZ customer service representative who sits on the 100 Best Committee, says those suggestions have run the gamut. These range from TZ Carez volunteer opportunities to team-building events like monthly potlucks, holiday parties, and even a company-wide personality quiz. One of the committee’s most successful innovations was a job shadowing week that gave our employees the opportunity to spend time in other departments. “We have a long list of suggestions to work with, but we’re invited to talk to our different departments and see what they recommend, whether it’s different snacks in the break room or something more out there. Someone wanted a pajama day and put a suggestion about that in the recommendation box, and we made it happen!” Lindsey says. Thanks to the 100 Best Committee, in the last year, our team has bonded over water balloon fights, egg-and-spoon races, company-wide spirit weeks, and delicious barbecue. “It has been a big hit, especially the monthly potlucks,” Lindsey says. “They bring everyone together to eat, spend time talking, and even swap recipes. One of TZ’s owners, John Lubisich, is a mean grilling machine. He has brisket figured out, and that makes it feel like a big cookout. It’s great to be able to take an hour out of your normal lunch routine and spend it together. I definitely think it has helped boost morale!” We already know that the 100 Best Committee’s endeavors have paid off within the company, but we still hope to see all of their hard work reflected in the Oregon Business Journal rankings this year. Even when we hit No. 1, we’ll keep taking suggestions and laboring to make TZ Medical the best company it can be. With more than 1.5 million food items to choose from, a weight-tracking component, and more, My Macros+ covers all

your bases. Reviewers rave about the app’s flexible goal-setting feature, which allows for intermittent fasting, calorie/carbohydrate cycling, and meal plans that include 6–8 meals per day. ATE Ate bills itself as a “visual, mindful, and non-judgmental” food tracking app. Unlike most options on the market, Ate focuses on feelings rather than numbers. Instead of counting calories, its users snap photos of their meals and input why they ate — whether they were hungry, stressed, or socializing — and how the meal made them feel. It’s an ideal strategy for those worried that too much data could trigger an obsession or disordered eating. Once you find a food tracking app you like, try pairing it with other tools that can help you meet your goals. Whether you need help shopping for healthier foods, making smart choices when eating out, or finding nutritious recipes with ingredients you have at home, there’s an app for that. HOW LESSONS LEARNED FROM SPORTS FORMS OUR COMPANY CULTURE

As you no doubt heard as a child, playing sports provides a plethora of benefits, ranging from better heart health to stronger interpersonal skills. The ability to work well on a team is often cited as the biggest perk of all, and here at TZ Medical, we owe a debt to sports for just that. Many of our employees come from sports backgrounds, and the values they learned in those pursuits have been instrumental in building our cooperative, goal-oriented company culture. “Through sports, I learned that paying attention to detail and active listening are important skills that are exercised daily,” says Dane Strength, a TZ inside sales representative who played football, basketball, and baseball in high school. “But most importantly, sports taught me selflessness and working together with others were the best ways to achieve a common goal.”

Mechanical engineer and former baseball and soccer player Austin Ziegler adds, “Working on multiple projects at a time, I realized time management and leadership are huge. I have to prioritize my projects and trust that my team will complete their jobs to get the task accomplished on time.” Going into this new year, we’re incredibly grateful for all of the team players we have here at TZ Medical. We couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work and play with!
