SCHOOL’S NO LONGER OUT FOR THE SUMMER

Back to School for the Gilberts

I remember sending both my kids off to their first day of school. They’re going into second and third grade this year, but I can remember both of their first days like it was yesterday. When they got on the bus, I’m not sure who was more excited: my wife and me or my kids. There’s always some preparation in the days leading up to the main event. You have to make sure their backpack and supplies are all squared away, but once they take those first steps on the bus, the excitement turns to nerves. We’re not nervous wrecks by any stretch of the imagination, but like most parents, we hope that our kids will fit in and make friends. As a parent, you want to know that you’ve helped your children develop societal competency. Take lunch for example. We wanted to make sure our kids used their lunch money the right way, but to do that, we had to help them memorize their account number. We spent nights rehearsing it until both parties were confident that when lunchtime came, they could get food.

So we made sure they raised their hands and addressed the teacher in the right way. Proper behavior is just as important to learn as English or math. Luckily for me, my kids love school. My wife is a second-grade teacher, so that helps, but it’s been fascinating to see them latch on to learning regardless of outside stimuli. My daughter won the “Little Teacher Award” for her class this year. School for her isn’t just a daily activity. When she comes home, she plays teacher so she can be just like her mom. My son benefits from having his sister at the school as well because she can

help with any problems he might run into. Not that he needs it. He is the kickball captain of the recess yard, after all. The beginning of the school year is always a little different at our house — not just for our kids, but for my wife too. She’ll usually spend the first couple weeks before school preparing her classroom. She’ll break out her stash of school supplies and organize her classroom so it’s conducive to learning. Until schools starts; however, it’s time to enjoy the remainder of the summer we have left. Our children are in camps of all shapes and sizes this summer. Sports camps. Craft camps. Swimming camps. You name it. If

there’s a camp for it, my kids are at it. When they

aren’t doing that, we’ll go to Hershey Park or find some engaging activities for us to do as a family. I’m sure this year will have the same excitement, but now both my kids are seasoned veterans of their first days. Maybe in the next couple years, that excitement will turn to dread, but for now, we’ll cherish the joy my children have for school.

AS A PARENT, YOU WANT TO KNOW THAT YOU’VE HELPED

YOUR CHILDREN DEVELOP SOCIETAL COMPETENCY.

– Dr. Michael Gilbert, DPT

Fitting in with their peers is half the battle. It’s important that our children use their manners when they’re in the classroom.

Become a ‘Dog Whisperer’ TRAIN AS A PACK FOR BETTER RESULTS

Your whole family adores your dog — but not the barking. This issue can lead to feelings of frustration, and the more frustrated you get, the more your dog barks. It’s their only way of communicating, and they’re telling you, “My needs are not being met.” As Cesar Millan, the original “dog whisperer,” explains, “A barking dog needs exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order.” Exercise Part of the barking issue may be due to pent-up energy. According to the humane society, “A tired dog is a good dog and one who is less likely to bark from boredom or frustration.” If you already take

Any attention your dog gets when he’s barking, even yelling, “Rover, stop!” teaches him to keep going, because you’re rewarding him with attention. Wait until your dog has stopped barking to give him any sort of attention, including looking at them. “To be successful with this method, you must wait as long as it takes for him to stop barking,” advises the Humane Society. Affection Of course, your dog needs love and attention to thrive — a lack of it could contribute to barking behavior. Reinforce silence by giving your dog a treat and an encouraging pat when she demonstrates good behavior, like not barking. “Our pups want to work for our attention,” Cesar Millan reminds us. “Allowing her to do that and to see your happiness is, to your dog, the biggest reward of all.”

your pup on a morning walk, try adding in an evening walk. You could add it to your child’s chore list and help get out some of the kid’s pent-up energy, too. It may also be beneficial to practice obedience exercises and games that challenge your dog. Discipline

To make your training program successful, consistency is key. Enlist the help of the whole family to stick to the principles. Together, you can foster a calm, peaceful home where you and your dog happily coexist.

To put a stop to the behavior, you’ll first need to change any of your behavior that’s reinforcing it.

PRENATAL AND POSTPARTUM THERAPY PT for New and Expectant Mothers

Pregnancy is one of life’s most magical processes, but it can also come with plenty of aches and pains. It goes without saying that women undergo immense physiological change during the course of a pregnancy, and these changes can be painful and uncomfortable. Physical therapy can help ease your pain and making you feel more comfortable both during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. It’s a good idea to consult a physical therapist as soon as you are aware of your pregnancy. During your first trimester, you may begin to experience lower back pain. The pain usually results from changes in your posture that occur naturally as your baby grows and your uterus expands. Posture correction, hands-on manual therapy, and stretching can help limit your discomfort. In later stages of pregnancy, many mothers suffer from diastasis recti, a separation of the abdominal muscles. According to WebMD, about two-thirds of pregnant women develop this condition. Your therapist can prescribe exercise to strengthen both your abdominal muscles and those surrounding them, limiting the risk of long-term pain and injury. As your pregnancy enters its third trimester, you may start to

feel shortness of breath caused by increased pressure placed on your diaphragm. Understanding your respiratory mechanics will give you the tools to breathe fully throughout your pregnancy. Even women who have a relatively pain-free pregnancy can experience symptoms after giving birth. Among the most common are pelvic pain, back issues, incontinence, pain during sexual intercourse, and organ prolapse. While some of these symptoms will resolve themselves as your body adjusts after childbirth, you should consult with a physical therapist to ensure that your issues are not severe. A proper exercise and therapy program can help get you back to normal quickly with minimal complications. At Gilbert Physical Therapy, we specialize in helping new and expectant mothers experience the joy of childbirth without having to suffer through undue pain during the pregnancy and postpartum stages. Whether you’ve just gotten the good news that you’re pregnant or your due date is fast approaching, call us today to see how we can help.

The Strangest Holidays in August

February has Valentine’s Day; September has Labor Day; December, of course, has Christmas; and August has, um, National Raspberry Cream Pie Day. August may not host any major holidays, but it doesn’t lack for some of the goofiest on the calendar. August 6: National Wiggle Your Toes Day While the origin of this holiday is uncertain, it’s held every year on August 6. To celebrate, people are encouraged to wear sandals, flip flops, or other toe-exposing footwear. You can also frolic barefoot in the grass or simply stretch those digits throughout the day. Just don’t expect to see any Hallmark cards devoted to National Wiggle Your Toes Day anytime soon. August 13: Left-Handers Day About 10 percent of the population is left-handed. Lefties may be stuck in a right-hand-dominant world, but on August 13, they rule the roost. Originally founded in England, Left-Handers Day has taken off in the Are These on Your Calendar? August’s Silliest Holidays

U.S. Righties are encouraged to try out a left-handed approach for the day. Lefties, for their part, are free to be themselves. August 17: National Thrift Shop Day Thrift shops are a staple of American commerce, so it makes sense that there is a day devoted to them. Take the day to hunt for lost treasures and screaming deals. Many thrift shops also benefit nonprofit organizations, giving you even more reason to frequent them. August 27: National ‘Just Because’ Day This celebration is really scratching the bottom of the holiday barrel. Joseph J. Goodwin created National “Just Because” Day in the 1950s. It’s a day to do something “just because.” Be spontaneous and have a little fun. There’s no one way to celebrate, which is fitting, given that the existence of the holiday seems to defy logic altogether.
