LETTER FROM THE OWNER As we start our new calendar year it usually coincides with the restarting of deductibles with a patient’s insurance as well. Patient’s costs are often significant when it comes to health care and this can weigh heavily on whether to seek care of just do the wait and see approach and hope the pain goes away, or just put up with the pain and the limitations it creates. What are all the hidden costs of being in chronic pain? 1. When you are in pain, you’re not usually enjoying your time; life can become an ongoing drag without much of a future. If you value your time and what you enjoy doing with your time, losing your enjoyment of it can be an ongoing loss.

Perhaps the most common way we perceive the cost of something is related to an actual monetary cost but as I was talking to a patient who had a high deductible recently I came to realize the many hidden costs associated with not addressing a problem that is not going away. Costs relate more than to just a direct expense out of a patient’s pocket, actually to my surprise and my patient’s, pain and an inability to move well have many associated costs. Let’s add up a few of the costs that pain robs a person from in life. These can be overlooked in trying to decide whether to take action and handle a back, neck, shoulder or knee problem. So the question becomes:

2. When you are in pain it robs you of your energy and even the simplest of tasks are work; one usually becomes less productive and are not able to get as much done. Just getting out of a chair can be a painful challenge. What is the cost of the frustration when you lose your ability to do simple tasks? Frustration is a common emotion of people in chronic pain. 3. A person can miss work more frequently which can influence their productivity at their job. Job reviews can be affected and possible advancement as well. This could be a big cost.
