The holidays are often a time when food takes centre stage. Here are a few of our favourite things that will help you make the holidays delightfully delicious!
I feel proud that I live in a country that has allowed me to be successful and to be who I am as a person. Before being a chef, I wanted to be an ambassador of India in Canada, and whenever I leave Canada to travel, I want to be a self- designated ambassador of Canada. It’s a huge honour that I take very seriously. I am both touched and humbled by the support I receive, so I work hard at maintaining that legacy. This morning I was brainstorming new menus and I felt like a kid again! I love to create new things and push myself so people can enjoy my products. I never want to get bored. Q: What was the biggest thing you learned about yourself when writing your new memoir, “Vij: A Chef’s One-Way Ticket to Canada with Indian Spices in His Suitcase?” It showed me how many mistakes I’ve made, how many times I’ve said sorry. I am more and more human and humbled by what I have done. Writing this was like talking to a shrink for the past two and a half years. A great therapy session, with lots of emotions. Sometimes I would stop and didn’t want to write anymore. I am surprised I was capable of writing that much emotion, candidly. Q: The holidays are the perfect time for the family to share a meal together. What are your favourite holiday traditions? We have no family traditions. When everyone else is having a holiday we are working! December 10 to 31 is the busiest time for us. For me, holiday time is in October or the end of January. We just take time when we can squeeze it in. I work 365 days a year because it’s my business. I decide when I will take time off: for instance, tomorrow I will be walking the seawall with my daughter. Q: What are your top four kitchen essentials? My top four include a bottle of wine, music, room for dancing, and a second bottle of wine! Q: You recently gave a TEDx talk about the importance of putting away our phones when sharing a meal. As a restaurateur, how have you seen the presence of cell phones change the dining experience over the past decade? It has taken away the joy of living in the moment, and simply enjoying a meal. As a chef, it is a bit disheartening. I am not knocking social media, because as a form of communication, it has a huge role in making us all successful. However, there is a time and a place for everything.

As a goaltender, you have two Olympic Gold Medals and are now training for the possibility of competing in your third Olympic Games in Pyeongchang in 2018. That is incredible! What are you looking forward to the most? There are so many things, but the excitement of wearing the Maple Leaf and representing Canada at the Olympics is an unbelievable feeling and a true honour. You have had a career in the Southern Professional Hockey League that has involved a lot of moving around and living out of a suitcase. What is the best part of your adventures in the league? The best part involves getting to see new places and experience things I would never be able to if it wasn’t for hockey. Who knew I would have the opportunity to play the game I love, live in a beautiful place like Georgia, and play against teams from Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi? It has been an amazing experience.
What would we find in your hockey bag that might surprise us? Hairspray – although if you saw my hair, it probably wouldn’t surprise you. You can fix almost anything with a bit of hairspray. Do you have any holiday traditions that you take with you wherever you are living? What are they? My family always enjoys Chinese food on Christmas Eve. It wouldn’t be Christmas without fried rice, noodles and all kinds of delicious dishes with garlic, ginger, soy sauce and other flavours. You must also be a fan of someone. Who inspires you and why? I am a fan of Bill Ranford– former goalie for the Edmonton Oilers and the current LA Kings goalie coach. I grew up attending his goalie school, and he really personifies what it takes to be a professional athlete. As great of a goalie as he was, however, he’s an even better person on so many levels.

Q: Johnny, you are amazing! You’re a multi-Juno and Canadian Country Music Association award winner, multi-platinum artist in Canada AND you have had multiple sold out tours. You’ve hit all the high notes! Is there anything else you dream of? I’ve recently completed a musical I’ve called, “My Bonnie Lass,” written as a dedication to my late granny, Margaret Reid. It’s a piece celebrating her life and the overall strength of women–especially women of that time period. I’d like to see her life story performed on stage in the near future. As far as long-term goals, I pray for good health and continued opportunities to sing my songs, play my music and tell my stories. Q: With all your success, how do you stay so grounded and humble? I was told a long time ago to always keep my feet on the ground because it’s hard to fall off of the floor. I come from a very humble background where people are judged on character and kindness. I’ve never thought of myself or viewed myself as anything better than anyone else and it’s been the key to my success. Q: Your new album “Revival” is now available! What does your latest release mean to you? This album is steeped in influences from my childhood. I grew up listening to my mother’s old soul records and my dad’s old Memphis country records. It’s an album I’ve always wanted to make and I’m very excited to let everyone hear it. It was recorded live over a two-day period and because of that, it has a soulfulness that I’ve never been able to capture before. I also feel it’s a true reflection of my growth as an artist and songwriter.
Q: This has been a milestone year for Canada. What has Canada’s 150th birthday meant to you? What Canada means to me cannot be put into words. She has given me more than anyone will ever know and I will forever be indebted to her for all the gifts and opportunities she has given. The 150th celebration was an opportunity for me, like millions of other Canadians, to celebrate our home and native land and to show the rest of the world how it should be done. Q: Tell us about your personal style. Do you like to dress up for holiday celebrations? Do you keep it casual when you’re spending time with the family? Do you have a favourite ‘look’? My favourite look is a pair of shorts, flip flops and a hoodie. Unfortunately, I don’t get much time to enjoy that look. I like keeping it simple and comfortable for the most part. However, on stage I like to get dressed and present myself and my band as entertainers. I like a fitted suit and a great pair of shoes. It’s either one or the other for me. I’m either Dad, Johnny Reid or somewhere in between with my style. Q: With four kids, the holidays must be an extra special time of the year for you and your wife. Do you have any holiday traditions? The biggest tradition for us is to all be together Christmas Eve. We let the kids open up a gift, we eat, sing and talk about Christmases past, and the ones we have lost to time. We celebrate the season and the true meaning of it. Christmas is truly a gift and my favourite time of year. We always make a traditional Scottish meal called Stovies on Christmas Eve and from time to time have friends swing in for a wee dram.
