the “ Missionary Plague in Palestine.” This same Rabbi has sought to discour age and unsettle young converts from Judaism here in our own city as well. Pharisees Still With Us How strange it is that the Rabbis and the Jewish people in general give them selves no concern when one or more of their number drift away from Judaism into skepticism and even into infidelity, but as soon as one of their number becomes a Christian those who know of it seek to discourage, discredit and denounce such a one. Many of the Pharisees are with us still and the words of Jesus are still ap plicable to them— “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of God against men; for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are enter ing to go in.” (Matt. 23:13.) The Jew Fish “ The Fishermen’s Club” meetings which are held each Monday evening are a good place to go to catch “ fish” as well as to learn how to catch “ fish” and many “ fish” of all kinds are caught there. I want to tell this month of a “ Jew-fish” caught there recently. He was a young Russian Jew and though lie had been in this country a long time yet he had not learned to read and write and this made it hard for him to find work. Then, too, he was afflicted with tuberculosis and had to have outside work of a light nature. He accepted an invitation to visit us at the Mission House and after talking over plans for finding work, we dis cussed Judaism vs. Christianity. From the Old Testament scriptures he was shown how Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecies concerning Messiah and that to become a Christian was pot to change his religion but to discover the true Jewish faith. He left the house that aay impressed and much interested and as he went down the steps he said, “Well, maybe I’ll become a Christian myself before long.” He attended the church service with us the following Sunday evening and God providentially led the minister to choose as his text, “ Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved.” (Rom. 10:1.) The message was espe cially adapted for a Jewish hearer and when the invitation was given at the close we prayed that without any urging on our part, he might accept Christ
vinced of the truth of their message; he said to the men: “ Sirs, you have come to our village to urge people to abandon their superstitions and worship the true God; this is most commendable, but you cannot hope to transform a place in a moment. I hope that you will remain here and instruct the peo ple until all in every family know that Jesus is the Christ whom God has sent to take away the sins of the world and that all men everywhere ought to be lieve in Him that they may be saved. I have six sons and sixteen grandsons, and together with their wives and chil dren there are over forty persons in my family. Alas! my eyes are now so poor that I cannot read your books, and so cannot explain them to the members of my family. This is a great misfor tune, but while you are here I want to attend your preaching services, and want all the members of my family to attend that they, too, may hear the message you bring to us.” With hearty greetings, Truly yours in His service, FRANK A. KELLER. Changsha, Hunan, China. Request for Special Prayer In answer to prayer, God has raised up Rev. and Mrs. Walter T. Steven, as helpers for Dr. Keller, Mr. and Mrs. Steven are now in Canada, but expect to leave for China some time in June. They are both the children of mission aries, and are most admirably fitted for this blessed work. We are asking our friends to be much in prayer for these dear friends as they take up this new work. The Jews Stirred Up Opposition on the part of the Jews toward our missionary work among them has culminated recently in a long article in “ The Times,” a Jewish news paper published in Los Angeles. The writer of the article in question warns Los Angeles Jews against the Bible In stitute, calling it (and justly so) a “ university where they teach men and women how to capture Jewish souls.” The article then goes on to quote, or rather misquote, the Bible Institute’s statement of doctrine, and, misunder standing it, is led to draw wrong in ferences from it. A certain Jewish Rabbi of our city is highly commended for his noble (? ) efforts in combatting J E W IS H W O R K
