Mariah Pfundheller credits her UWSP undergraduate experiences for fueling her passion for diversity and social justice, including studying multiple disabilities, teaching English in Japan, and coordinating diversity presentations. After graduating, Mariah taught many ages and needs, ranging from three-year-old early childhood special education to high school seniors with learning, emotional, intellectual, and cognitive disabilities. She coached Special Olympics sports and advised “Circle of Friends”, uniting students in special and regular education. While earning a Masters Degree in Exceptional Education, emphasizing Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teaching (DHH), Mariah taught students who are DHH, from preschoolers to seniors throughout Wisconsin. In 2020, Mariah returned to UWSP as a Lecturer, teaching early childhood special education courses to current and future educators, advising early childhood majors, co-advising Student Council for Exceptional Children, supervising student teachers and interns, and participating on the University Personnel Development Committee. Through the Educational Sustainability Doctoral program, Mariah will focus her studies on enhancing early childhood special education novice teacher preparation courses. Obtaining this education fuels her passion for learning how to best serve others fairly, especially in areas of diversity and social justice. This program also allows Mariah to stay abreast of current research and successful teaching practices to better prepare and support future teachers.
