Luis Caballero is a Learning and Development Manager at a large wine company in northern California. An avid proponent for lifelong learning, Luis approaches educational sustainability from the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As part of Cohort 7, he is interested in developing workforce education toolkits that dismantle cultural and linguistic barriers, promote greater employee engagement, and facilitate global collaboration among wine professionals. The American wine industry consists of a rapidly changing workforce. More women and young people than ever are launching their careers in wine world, and record numbers of Latin American immigrants continue to perform the physically demanding labor required to make wine. These diverse professionals possess the skills and knowledge to create an inclusive economy, but their lived experiences have historically been underreported even though they comprise a major portion of the American agriculture sector. Drawing from the principles of critical pedagogy, Luis’s educational sustainability endeavors aim to tell the stories of the talented people behind the wines. Luis was born in Mexico and has lived and worked in four different countries. He has spent nearly 15 years teaching English, Spanish, and business communication courses in universities, non-profits, and corporate settings. Luis attributes his successes to his parents’ sacrifices and resilience in the face of adversity. They instilled in him a deep love for education from a very young age, and as a result, he doubts he will ever stop teaching and learning. Luis’s love for wine, however, is the product of his own curiosities.
