PROJECT

ULSTER HOSPITAL LAUNDRY

SPIRAX SARCO UK PROVIDED VALVES, CONDENSERS AND HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEMS FOR AN EFFICIENT AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY INSTALLATION DESIGN… STEAM AND HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEMS

S pirax Sarco UK specialises in a steam and condensate loop. For the installation at the Ulster Hospital Laundry, the company provided control valves, DP27 pressure-reducing valves, an MFP14 mechanical pump, an STS17.2 steam trap station, a TVA steam flowmeter, a blowdown heat recovery system and various other ancillaries. comprehensive range of products, systems and services for the As the space was quite tight in some areas, such as the boiler room, Spirax Sarco UK suggested the SafeBloc double isolation valves, which take the space of one thanks to their unique compact design. “In this project, steam is utilised in the various barrier washers and tunnel washers, as well as for general heating of the building,” explained Ryan Crawford, Area Sales Engineer, Ireland. He also commented that the company had been involved in the installation from

the initial design concept right the way through to install completion and will be available for aftercare-support throughout the life of the system. “We not only supply components but also assist our customers in the correct sizing, selection and utilisation of their system as a whole. During the install we visited the site to provide guidance and support in line with best practices and to ensure the longevity of the system. On completion, our engineers visited the site again to carry out the commissioning of the system,” he added. To ensure the most efficient design, there were several unique Spirax Sarco pieces of equipment used in the Ulster Hospital Laundry. An exhaust vapour condenser (EVC) was installed on the exhaust vent pipe from the condensate recovery unit. “Traditionally, waste steam is vented to the atmosphere at this location. This valuable heat energy would therefore be lost but, by utilising the EVC, the

energy was able to be utilised to pre-heat make-up water to the system instead,” Ryan explained. The more efficient steam system helps reduce CO 2 and carbon emissions, contributing to a more environmentally friendly design. The company also provided a Spirax Sarco blowdown heat recovery system to recover up to 80% of the heat from the blowdown to be recovered. The system also reduces expensive treated make-up water by recovering flash steam. Spirax Sarco was very satisfied with this impressive installation. The company has worked with R&F Mechanical Services on several projects and Ryan added that the contractor was open to suggestions and willing to rethink the plans to find budget-friendly solutions. “They are a very experienced and professional team, they understand the install,” the Area Sales Engineer said. “When you work with R&F, you know everything will be all right in the end.”
