GARY A. DORDICK OWNER | MANAGING ATTORNEY T hirty-eight years after he skipped college to speed from high school to law school, Gary A. Dordick and his Dordick Law Corporation show no sign of slowing down. In recent months, the plaintiff personal injury litigator settled a trio of cases for more than $30 million each, won $13.5 million at a jury trial in which his daughter gave a withering closing rebuttal and drew several hundred lawyers to his own institute of higher education, the Dordick Trial College, held annually in Cabo San Lucas. “People ask, ‘Why are you still working?’ and I tell them that I don’t play golf, and this is the only thing I’m good at,” Dordick joked. It was his high school girlfriend’s father, personal injury lawyer Donald F. Kottler, who gave a teenage Dordick a file room job and alerted him that there was one local law school that didn’t require a college degree, the University of West Los Angeles. Dordick put himself through the four-year night school program. “At the time, its Bar pass rate was about 18%, but I made it. Then I lost my first trial,” he said. He wouldn’t lose many more. In April, he obtained $13.5 million -- $4.5 million of it in punitives — for a man injured in a low- impact rear-end collision. Dordick said the defense minimized the severity of the incident. “The defense lawyer was a big guy, very aggressive, very loud in his closing argument, showed a lot of outrage,” Dordick said. “Then, my daughter Taylor, who weighs about 85 pounds, got up on rebuttal and told the jury, ‘My Dad says the law is an honorable profession, but I didn’t feel that yesterday listening to our opponent.’ And the jury came back for us in just a few hours.” Issaian v. Gonzalez Logistics Inc. et al., 20STCV06902 (L.A. Super. Ct., filed Feb. 20, 2022). Last year, Dordick won a $900 million jury verdict, including $800 million in punitives, for a fashion model who accused the wealthy heir to a Greek Coca-Cola bottling company of sexual assault. “Most scorched-earth defense I’ve ever seen,” Dordick said. Doe v. Alkiviades David et al. , 20ATCV37498 (L.A. Super. Ct., filed Sept. 30, 2020). That outcome won a Daily Journal Top Verdict award.
