Verry Elleegant’s 2021 victory marked her 10th Group 1 win, confirming her status as a superstar of the turf following the retirement of her legendary stablemate, Winx. In front of a COVID-restricted crowd of 10,000, the planets aligned as master trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald guided the champion mare to her historic win. She became the 12th mare to win the Cup – a lineage beginning with Acrasia in 1904 – realising a lifelong dream for her breeder and part-owner, New Zealander Don Goodwin.
