Ciaron Maher runs one of Australian racing’s biggest operations. We went inside to meet the people who keep it running.

N o one ever said it was going to be easy. But Ciaron Maher wouldn’t have it any other way. Maher has more than 400 horses in work, employs more than 200 people at locations across Australia and finances a wage bill of more than $1 million a month. It’s a 24/7 operation, one that demands high levels of trust and delegation to a committed, youthful staff. The workload might daunt most horsemen, but Maher gets as big a kick out of his vocation now as he did when he started. We spoke to him, and some of his key staff, about the challenges of running such a large racing enterprise.
