From the gold in the trophy to the car parks, these are some of the fixtures that make the first Tuesday in November what it is.

THE TROPHY Eighteen-carat gold, hand-spun from more than 40 individual pieces over roughly 250 hours of work, and known officially as the Loving Cup for its three handles – one each for owner, trainer and jockey. It has been made in Australia since 1916, and its current design dates back to 1919. The winning jockey, trainer and even strapper each take home their own scaled- down replica; the strapper’s is named the Tommy Woodcock, in honour of Phar Lap’s own.
