Flood victims need to be wary of frauds

Afin d’être considéré admissibles à l’accès au soutien de rétablissement de la Croix-Rouge, les personnes touchées par les inondations doivent s’inscrire en rem- plissant le formulaire d’inscription de la Croix-Rouge, à l’aréna de Clarence Creek ou au Centre de traitement et d’informa- tion dans le stationnement TSC de la Plaza Rockland. Les heures du centre sont de 8 h à 20 h. Les ambulanciers paramédiques seront sur place pendant 12 heures pour aider les gens. Une infirmière praticienne sera sur place samedi et dimanche, de 10 h à 14 h. De l’aide psychologique, gracieuseté de l’Hôpi- tal Général de Hawkesbury, sera également disponible samedi et dimanche, de 10 h à 18 h. La Croix-Rouge aura également du personnel sur place. Les résidents touchés par les inondations qui souhaitent un vaccin contre le tétanos peuvent se rendre au Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario, au 2229, rue Laurier. Les jours et les heures de bureau sont : le 16 mai, de 10 h à 16 h; le 17 mai, de 13 h 30 à 15 h 30; le 18 mai de 1 h 15 à 3 h 45; le 19 mai, de 13 h 30 à 15 h 30. If the caller claims to represent the Red Cross or some other actual agency, phone that group and get confirmation. The other fraud routine that some con artists will try is the phony disaster relief contractor. The scammer will phone or ap- proach a homeowner in person and claim to be a contractor dealing in property cleanup or water testing and filtration service, an insurance agent, or local building inspec- tion service or some other need following a disaster. Ask for proper identification and then call the city or Better Business Bureau or the Ministry of Consumer and Business Services to confirm they are who they say they are. Get written estimates for any cleanup or relief work proposed. Make sure to compare with at least two estimates for that service from local reputable businesses in the area. Remember that a good contractor always asks lots of questions about a situation so they understand the problem and can do a proper plan to deal with it.
The constant rain has ended at last, the sun is out, and the floodwaters of the Ottawa Ri- ver are starting to recede. As homeowners in Rockland, L’Orignal, Wendover, Lefaivre and other riverside communities wait for the time when they can return to their homes, the OPP have some advice about con artists who take advantage of tragedy to victimize disaster victims even more. The Eastern Ontario regional head- quarters for the OPP issued an email alert warning about the chance of con routines involving either fake charity relief groups or bogus businesses offering property cleanup and water testing services. The Red Cross has now set up in the Pres- cott-Russell region to both provide disaster relief help to flood victims, and also begin a fundraising campaign to help provide some financial aid to those victims.The Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) alsomay allow flood victims relief from any late-filing penalties on income tax reports because of the emer- gency, and the City of Clarence-Rockland has announced that it will forgive local pro- perty owners affected by the flooding any late penalties on property tax. Homeowners can apply to both the CRA and the city for details on how to apply for those tax penalty exemptions. But the OPP warn that there is a chance of con artists launching their own fake flood

Il ne faut pas toucher aux sacs de sable utilisés dans le cadre de barricades pour l’inondation, car ils sont maintenant considérés contaminés. Les équipes de Tomlinson Construction suivront la procé- dure HAZMAT pour retirer les sacs de sable et en disposeront de façon appropriée. L’électricité sera restaurée dans certaines zones touchées par les inondations, comme le chemin Voisine et l’ancienne route 17, dès que les maisons dans ces zones auront
