MADDEN Monthly Thank You, Veterans! PHYSICAL THERAPY

HONORING MILITARY SERVICE MEMBERS THIS NOVEMBER

Sometimes I’m in awe at just how lucky I am to do what I do every day. I always knew that I wanted to help people, and I’m grateful to do what I love. But it’s often the patients themselves who make this job worthwhile. I’ve treated many wonderful patients, yet there is one group of patients that is an absolute honor to serve: veterans. We will never be able to thank veterans and their families enough for what they do every day and the sacrifices they continue to make. I don’t come from a military family, nor do I know many people who served in the military. I considered enlisting prior to college, but I feared I wouldn’t be a great physical candidate for the military. I can never understand the sacrifice these men and women have made to our country, but I understand their desire to serve. It’s a tremendous quality. However, I’m honored to offer my expertise to patients who served in our military because it’s a way for me to give back just a little bit of the tremendous service they gave to our country. Hearing a few of their many stories about their time in the service is just a bonus. A few years ago, I was treating a patient who was well into his 90s, but this gentleman had lived a full life very early on. During World War II, he served as a pilot in the Pacific, battling Japanese forces that were threatening our western border. One day, his plane was shot out of the sky, landing him somewhere over the enemy line. I’m not sure how long he had to camp out across enemy lines, but he had to survive in a tropical landscape with the threat of enemy fire lurking over him until someone finally rescued him. I couldn’t imagine what he must have been thinking or what he experienced, but I know he was a very courageous man. In Dauphin, I have plenty of opportunities to meet, treat, and learn from veterans. One of my patients actually has some of the most interesting stories I have never heard. Let me explain. This man served in the military and later worked for NASA. He knew all the astronauts who flew in the Apollo missions and worked directly with people who shaped our country’s expeditions in space. Still, all this patient would tell us was that he was a spy of some sort, leaving us to guess what kind of adventures he has in his personal memory log.

I could fill this entire newsletter with stories from patients who are veterans. Many of our older male patients are veterans because of the era they grew up in, as regular drafts supplied men for battle during WWII and the Vietnam War. Spending a few hours with them each week and treating the ailments that cause them pain and listening to them is amazing. This Veteran’s Day, everyone at Madden Physical Therapy Dauphin would like to thank every veteran and their family for their dedication and service. It’s because of you that we enjoy daily freedoms and holidays. It’s an honor to serve and treat you.

Engage Your Kids on Thanksgiving

With These Gratitude- Themed Games Thanksgiving is an excellent time to teach children about gratefulness. By planning some fun, gratitude-themed games, you can impart a valuable lesson and spend some quality family time together. Get your kids in the holiday spirit by adding a Thanksgiving twist to these classic games. Pictionary Want to bring out your kids’ creative sides? Pictionary is the perfect way to encourage artistic expression and grateful thinking. Try adding a rule where players have to draw something they’re grateful for. This will get your kids thinking beyond turkey and stuffing and give them an imaginative way to express their gratitude. Plus, who doesn’t love a good art contest? Guess Who? To play gratitude-themed Guess Who?, have each participant write down their name and

something they’re thankful for on a slip of paper and put it in a bowl. Then, at the dinner table, have each person draw a random slip and read what it says without saying the name while everyone else tries to guess who wrote it. While Pictionary may get your kids talking about what they are thankful for, Guess Who? will tune them into what others around them are thankful for too. Pick-Up Sticks Like regular pick-up sticks, the goal is to remove a stick from a haphazard pile without

disturbing the others. However, by using colored sticks that represent different kinds of thankfulness — such as places, people, or food — you can make players think outside the box. This will ensure you get a wide range of creative, thoughtful answers whenever the kids pick up a stick. These modified games are great for helping your kids realize how much they have to be thankful for. Use these to spend some fun, educational, quality time with your family this Thanksgiving.
