T HE S COTTISH R ITE FROM Is the Scottish Rite the Upper
This paper examines a frequently debated question within Freemasonry: Is Scottish Rite Masonry the “ upper echelon ” or highest level of Freemasonry? The discussion is significant because the way Masons understand organizational hierarchy directly influences how members perceive identity, leadership, and the relationship between Craft Masonry and the appendant bodies. Misunderstanding the Scottish Rite as a superior or final stage of Freemasonry can unintentionally diminish the foundational role of the Symbolic Lodge, which remains essential to Masonic development and continuity. Using a military framework as an analytical lens, this paper explores the historical development, structure, and symbolism of the Scottish Rite — particularly the geometric arrangement of the Camp of the Royal Secret — and compares it to military organizational echelons and command structures. By examining leadership roles, chains of command, organizational responsibilities, and symbolic parallels, the author evaluates whether the term “ upper echelon ” accurately describes the Scottish Rite ’ s relationship to Freemasonry as a whole.
