A M ILITARY P ERSPECTIVE : Echelon of Freemasonry?
The central hypothesis of this article is that Scottish Rite Masonry, while highly structured, philosophically advanced, and organizationally complex, does not represent a higher or superior tier of Freemasonry. Rather, it functions as a complementary system that expands upon the lessons of Craft Masonry without replacing or superseding it. Ultimately, the paper argues that the relationship between Craft Masonry and the Scottish Rite is analogous to components within a broader system — distinct in function but interdependent in purpose. Understanding this distinction helps preserve balance within the fraternity and reinforces the idea that no single body constitutes the pinnacle of Masonry. In my attempt to provide an in-depth, research-based answer to the question, I researched the overall makeup of the Scottish Rite Camp, the membership grades of Scottish Rite Freemasonry, and its degrees.
