TAKING TIME WITH MY WIFE

I’m focusing on family this month in two big — and very different — ways. Obviously, Thanksgiving comes at the close of the month. Like most of you, I have plans with family, although we’re still not quite sure who will be hosting this year. But as important as big family get-togethers are, it’s just as important to spend quality time with family members one-on-one, and that’s what my wife and I are doing this month when we head to Vegas.

few times, and you can bet we’ll walk up and down the Strip just like we did years ago and see the sights. Whatever we get up to, we’ll be doing it together — and that’s the whole point of this trip. I’ve talked in the past about spending time with my wife and how important it is to us to get away together. The fact is, it isn’t always easy to find time sneak away. When you’re a parent, your time is not your own, and we’re both busy with other things besides our wonderful kids. But that makes it more important, not less, because the limited time in our days is one of the reasons we’re carving out time for this trip. I suspect we’ll be pretty excited to see the rest of the family when we get back, and I know I’m already looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner. We’ll show up at my mom’s house or my brother’s house, or Beth and I will host. Wherever we are, I’ll carve the turkey. I always get told to carve the turkey, My special technique is called “Get meat on the plates, quick!”, and that’s probably why I get asked to carve. After everyone has eaten, we’ll head into the family room together to watch “Elf,” as per tradition. How are you spending time with family this season? Whatever your plans, I hope you’ll share them the next time you’re in our office.

We haven’t been there as a couple since I was in dental school. Back then, we didn’t have a lot of money, so we just walked up and down the Strip and saw what we could see from there. It was still a lot to take in, and we had fun and took home some great memories. That said, we weren’t able to catch any shows or have a nice meal out, so we always knew we wanted to go back. Now we’re finally getting to do just that. We’ll go see Cirque du Soleil or some other show. We’ll also go out to dinner a

Happy Thanksgiving!

P.S. Now is a great time to schedule those end-of-year cleanings if you still have one left on your insurance; often, it’s a use-it-or-lose-it deal.

Family Activities Just because the kitchen might be off limits to your kids this Thanksgiving, doesn’t mean you can’t find a few creative ways to make the holiday extra special with fun activities. Coloring-Book Tablecloths Many of us are familiar with the kids’ table. It may be smaller than the grown-ups’ seating arrangement, but it doesn’t have to be any less special. Turn your kids’ table into a canvas for a colorful, creative dining experience. To do this, use craft paper to cover the table. Tape everything down tightly and provide crayons for every place setting. If you want to add some extra holiday spirit, put the drawing supplies in empty cranberry sauce and pumpkin cans.

FOR THANKSGIVING

Stuff the Turkey Game Want to get the kids outside so you can get to

work in the kitchen? Create a Thanksgiving-themed game for them to play outside while you prep the stuffing and put the turkey in the oven.

To play “Stuff the Turkey”, all you need is a few paper bags. Use two small bags stuffed with scrap paper to create legs and glue them to a larger bag folded to look like the body of a turkey. Now get ready to stuff. Anything soft and baseball-sized will work, even some balled-up paper. Kids will take turns trying to toss the balls into the turkey, scoring points for every shot made.

Opalescence Whitening for the Win

We stock Opalescence brand whitening solutions here in the office, including their toothpaste. Whitening toothpaste is a great way to maintain your white teeth! But if you aren’t comfortable whitening at home, or if you want to see results faster than you can achieve at home, we can also set you up with whitening treatment in the office. It takes two 20-minute sessions, and the effects last for a long time (especially if you maintain the whitening with toothpaste). We use the same Opalescence products that we recommend to our patients, and it’s safer than the lights that other dentists use because it doesn’t heat or damage the teeth. It’s faster than whitening at home, and it’s very affordable compared to other options that might not work as well. Normally, this whitening would cost $199. But bring in this newsletter, and you can get it for just $99 ! That’s right, if you bring in this newsletter or mention it when you book your appointment, we’ll give you in-office whitening for just $99! –Kalie and Caryn

When people think about whitening, they often think of the off-the-shelf products you can find at a drugstore or supermarket and use at home. And while at-home whitening is something we support here at Elkins Dental, we also want to make sure you’re using the right whitening products to keep your teeth healthy and bright. You might have heard bad stories about teeth whitening, and it’s true that there are risks if you go with the wrong brand. Our favorite brand? Opalescence. Opalescence products are designed to work with custom whitening trays, which we can take measurements for here in the office in about five minutes. Unlike other whitening brands, which can damage your teeth or make them more sensitive, Opalescence products have fluoride as well as an antiseptic agent. This means they actually remineralize your teeth, making them stronger than ever.

ICONIC MACY’S Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons

TURKEY DAY 5K BOISE WHERE: Downtown Boise WHEN: Thursday, November 23, 2017 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Thanksgiving is a holiday full of traditions, from turkey and stuffing to football and naps. Since 1924, the Macy’s Parade has grown to become not only a Thanksgiving staple but also the world’s largest parade. Over 3.5 million people attended the parade last year, with another 20 million tuning in from home. The main attraction is always the massive character balloons, which first graced the skies in 1927. Over the decades, some of these balloons have become nearly as famous as the character they depict. FELIX THE CAT When the Felix the Cat balloon appeared in 1931, it set the standard for all characters to follow. Sadly, the original balloon got tangled in wires and caught on fire, so it has been lost to history. Felix’s influence on the parade is so immense, however, that when Macy’s brought him back in 2016 for the parade’s 90th anniversary, they recreated his original design. Without Felix’s debut, that parade might look a lot different today. SNOOPY When it comes to balloon characters, none is more famous than the classic “Peanuts” beagle. His first balloon floated through the sky in 1968, and he’s been a regular fixture ever since. Charles Schultz’s famous pooch holds the record for most variations in a parade (eight) and most total appearances (40). Though Snoopy doesn’t come out every year, he usually closes the show when he does. PIKACHU The Pokémon mascot didn’t appear until 2001, but he’s become a star attraction, showing up every year since. Bright, expressive, and impossible to miss, Pikachu checks off all the boxes for a successful balloon character. For 16 years, those who predicted that Pokémon was just a fad have gotten a big, yellow reminder of just how wrong they were. Elkinsdental.com | 3

THE SECRET TO Incredible-Looking Leaf Crafts

It’s fall, and your Pinterest boards are full of fall crafts. You find yourself daydreaming about candles glowing in leaf-adorned jars, leafy wreaths on the front door, and a garland of leaves lending a touch of whimsy to the dining room. Colorful fall leaves are the secret to a home that’s perfectly decorated for the season, but how do experienced crafters find leaves that last? If you just grab a handful from your backyard, in a few weeks, your painstaking project has dried up and you’re stuck vacuuming leaf bits out of your carpet. It’s time to step up your crafting game and learn the trick to preserving leaves for years to come. Before you go out hunting for the perfect leaves, grab a few newspapers. After you’ve gathered up all your favorite leaves, place them in a single layer on a newspaper page. When choosing your leaves, make sure they are still fresh and flat. Leaves that are already dried or curling cannot be preserved well enough to use as decorations. If your leaves are damp, gently dry them off before putting them on the

newspaper. You find yourself daydreaming about candles glowing in leaf-adorned jars, leafy wreaths on the front door, and a garland of leaves lending a touch of whimsy to the dining room. Just letting your leaves dry flat isn’t enough for decorations that last. The true secret to leaf preservation is an all-in-one glue, sealer, and finish such as Mod Podge. This is a popular tool for decoupage projects, and it belongs in every craft closet. Once your leaves are dry, gently coat one side of each leaf in a layer of Mod Podge. Place your leaves on a sheet of wax paper and wait for them to dry. This should take less than an hour. When the Mod Podge is dry, turn the leaves over and coat the other side. Repeat with a second coat on each side. Mod Podge brings the bright colors back to your leaves and makes them more flexible. They’ll look like they just fell off the tree! These leaves will last for years, and you are free to craft to your heart’s content.
