USA WOMEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2023 RESULTS

With a roster of collegiate stars and an average age of 20, the USA Women’s AmeriCup team came home with a silver medal for the second time in history. The U.S. had a 5-2 record and played for a chance to win its third straight gold. In the tournament opener, the U.S. saw 11 of 12 players score to beat Venezuela 80-54, with Rickea Jackson and Angel Reese getting 11 points and Janiah Barker 10. The U.S. also dominated the boards, a trend that was echoed throught the tournament, with a 62-33 advantage. Rayah Johnson grabbed 14 rebounds and Reese nine. The U.S. had a much tougher battle in improving to 2-0 in Group A play, scoring the last nine points for a 65-56 victory over Argentina. Jackson led the way with 17 points and five rebounds, while Lauren Betts came off the bench for 10 points and 11 rebounds, including 10 boards in the second half. Jewel Spear hit three clutch 3-pointers, including a game-sealing trey with 59 seconds left. Reese had 15 rebounds, the second-most in U.S. AmeriCup history, behind Aliyah Boston’s 19 vs. Puerto Rico on June 19, 2021. Following a day off, the U.S. faced an imposing test in Brazil and lost 67-54, snapping the Americans’ 19-game AmeriCup winning streak. Betts, starting her only game of the tournament, had 11 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Jackson added 10 points. Betts’ three blocks tied Boston’s AmeriCup record, set June 13, 2021. Betts also matched Reese with the second-best rebounding performance in U.S. history in this event. Facing Cuba to finish group play, the U.S. bounced back in a big way, using a 37-2 run in the first half to roll to a 106-44 victory and clinch second place in Group A. Seven players scored in double figures. Betts continued her impressive play with 17 points, 14 rebounds and another record-tying three blocks. Jackson had 16 points and six rebounds, while Reese contributed 12 points and 14 rebounds. Johnson added 12 rebounds as the U.S. 75-35 advantage on the boards. In the quarterfinals, the inside combo of Betts and Reese fueled the U.S. to a 68-49 victory over Colombia. Betts had her fourth consecutive double-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds and a record four blocked shots, while Reese had 13 points and 18 boards. Betts broke the single-game blocks record she held with Boston. Reese surpassed her’s and Betts’ 15 boards from earlier in the tournament for the second-most in U.S. AmeriCup history. The U.S. had eight blocks in the tournament. Jackson added 15 points. The U.S. clinched a spot in the gold-medal game by scoring the last five points to beat Canada 67-63. Betts had 12 points, four rebounds and another three blocks. Reese posted her third double-double in a row with 10 points and 13 rebounds as well as three blocks. Reese put the U.S. on top to stay 64-63 on a putback with 2:35 remaining. Betts broke the U.S. AmeriCup record for blocks in the tournament with 14, surpassing Boston’s 11 in 2021. Brazil stood in the way of the U.S. winning a third straight gold medal, but the Brazllians proved to be the better team, using a 25-10 run in the third quarter to pull away for a 69-58 victory for their record sixth AmeriCup gold. Jackson, who led the U.S. during the tournament at 14.6 points per game and was named to the All-Star Five, finished with her best scoring output of the AmeriCup, recording 22 points, including 10 in the first quarter. Betts added her fifth double- double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and one block, giving her a U.S.-record 15 in the tournament. Reese had 78 rebounds in the tournament and Betts 76, both surpassing the U.S. record of 60 set by Venus Lacey in the 1989 AmeriCup. They finished second and third among AmeriCup rebounders, averaging 11.1 and 10.9 per game.
