USA WOMEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2021 RESULTS

Sending a team comprised of top collegiate athletes, the 2021 USA Women’s AmeriCup Team defeated six-straight senior women’s national teams for a gold medal. The USA set a U.S. women’s AmeriCup single-game record with seven blocks in a 102-39 win over Dominican Republic. Destanni Henderson led the way with 17 points, including five 3s. Elissa Cunane, who collected eight rebounds, and Sedona Prince each scored 12 points, and Aliyah Boston finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. The USA rode a 25-10 second quarter surge past Puerto Rico for an 87-65 win. Trailing 23-18 after the first, the USA tightened its defense to turn the game. Naz Hillmon had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Rhyne Howard had 17 points and and Boston had 15 points, eight rebounds and USA women’s AmeriCup single-game record three blocks. Making 14-of-15 free throws, the USA set a U.S. women’s AmeriCup team single-game record at 93.3% from the line, as Prince led the USA with 19 points and seven rebounds in a 102-53 win over Venezuela. Howard finished with 17 points and shot 5-of-9 from 3-point to set a U.S. women’s AmeriCup record for 3-point attempts while tying the record for makes. The USA defeated U.S. Virgin Islands 97-46 to advance to the semifinals. The USA finished the game with a 58-35 rebounding advantage and held U.S. Virgin Islands to 24.7% shooting from the field (18-73 FG). Naz Hillmon shot 7-of-8 from the free throw line and led the USA with 17 points and six rebounds. Boston, who was playing against her older sister, Alexis Boston, rounded out the USA’s double-digit scorers with 12 points and eight rebounds. Trailing 33-25 at halftime, the USA opened the third quarter with a 13-0 scoring run to take the lead, and it proved to be the difference in the USA’s 71-60 win over Brazil in the semifinals. The USA set a U.S. women’s AmeriCup single-game record for free throw percentage at 93.8% (15-16 FTs). Cunane finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, Howard added 12 and four, and Hillmon finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. The USA captured the gold medal with a 74-59 win over Puerto Rico. The gold medal game had it all – the USA riding a 21-11 third quarter run to victory, the lights going out (and ensuing dance off) and a crowd in favor of host Puerto Rico. Howard, who was named tournament MVP, finished with 22 points and five assists, and her 8-of-20 shooting from the field and 4-of-10 from 3-point set U.S. women’s AmeriCup records for field goal attempts and 3-point attempts. Cunane, who scored 12 points and had six rebounds, joined Howard on the all-tour- nament team. Boston collected a USA women’s AmeriCup record 19 rebounds (10 OR).
