USA WOMEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2019 RESULTS

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO • SEPTEMBER 22-29, 2019

It had been 12 years since the USA sent a team to what was previously the FIBA Americas Championship. Despite the gap, the result was the same: the U.S. women again returned home with a perfect record and the gold medal. Coached by Dawn Staley, the USA’s first test of the 2020 FIBA AmeriCup proved no test at all. The taller and much more experienced Amer- icans dominated their way to a 110-31 victory over Paraguay. Eleven of the USA 12 players scored in the romp, with Diamond DeShields leading the way with game-highs of 20 points and eight assists. Recording 31 assists as a team and getting 22 points from Sylvia Fowles, the USA defeated Colombia 88-46. Getting points from all 12 team members, the USA topped Argentina 100-50 behind 16 points from Katie Lou Samuelson and nine assists from Jordin Canada. Behind 19 points from DeShields, the USA closed out preliminary play and clinched the No. 1 seed for Group B after defeating previously unbeaten Brazil 89-73. The USA offense was also aided by Tina Charles, who finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Led by a defense that limited host Puerto Rico to just 27.0% shooting from the field (20-74 FGs), and owning a 63-34 rebounding advantage, the USA advanced to the gold medal game after a 78-54 semifinal win. Fowles led all scorers with 17 points and 13 rebounds and Charles also posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Struggling with its shooting, the USA turned to its defense and claimed the 2019 FIBA AmeriCup gold medal with a 67-46 victory over pre- viously undefeated Canada. The USA, playing in its first AmeriCup since 2007 when it also won gold, ended Canada’s streak of back-to-back AmeriCup titles with its perfect run. Olympic veterans Charles and Fowles paced the USA with 12 points apiece. The USA, which outscored its six opponents by 38.7 points a game during the tournament, featured three players on the AmeriCup All-Star Five Team - Jordin Canada, DeShields and Fowles, who also was named MVP of the tournament.
