Russell Fire Chief Bruce Armstrong, smil- ing and waving to the crowds, rode in the first truck in the parade, leaving his dep- uty-chief Darcy Provost to concentrate on his duty as the official parade chauffeur. Russell TownshipMayor Pierre Leroux also rode in the parade in one of the fire trucks. Marching along to the sound of trumpets and tambourines, dressed in their full gear and carrying symbolic fire axes, were Russell’s volunteer firefighters. Behind them followed guest delegations from neighbouring fire departments and also every child’s favourite firefighting mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog.
Sunshine weathermade for steady sales of ice cream and cool drinks as residents of Russell waited on street corners and other points along the village’s Main Street to cheer on the members of Russell’s volun- teer fire department as they turned out in full force and gear for a parademarking the 100 th anniversary of the local fire brigade. The June 6 celebration got underway with the first sounding of the fire sirens, announcing the parade that included every vehicle available in the department’s fire- fighting arsenal, along with a select number of historic fire vehicles. Among themwas the 1915 brigade pumper loaned to the village a century ago from the Town of Ottawa at a time when Russell village was in peril from
