There are industrial environments where a single spark is more than an inconvenience It is a potentially fatal ignition source.
At an operating refinery, offshore platform, FPSO, LNG terminal or vessel, hydrocarbons may be present while the equipment surrounding them still requires repair, replacement or modification. Maintenance does not disappear from the schedule because the work carries risk. Yet taking an entire facility gas-free can bring consequences measured in time, lost production and millions of dollars.
Nicholas Shutt, General Manager at PetroHab, has spent years working inside that conflict.
“The hazard has always been there,” he says.
“Hydrocarbons are always present on a live facility or in a refinery or offshore platforms or FPSOs or LNG tankers. But maintenance has also been a necessity.” PetroHab was built to help operators solve that problem A BETTER WAY TO CONTROL THE RISK When pressurized welding enclosures began gaining wider acceptance around 2010, hot-work containment was fairly cumbersome. Temporary wooden structures were being built around work areas, consuming material, creating waste and adding logistical challenges offshore and inside refineries. PetroHab President Samer Al-Azem saw an opportunity to create a better system and invented a panel interlocking technology that he dubbed “Quadra-Lock” . That reusable panel interlocking technology became the foundation of PetroHab’s modular hot work enclosure systems.
