2.2.4 Applications of Percent (continued)

Example 3 Estimate with Percents

Sales tax is a percent of an item’s cost. To find the amount of sales tax on an item, multiply the percent of sales tax by the item’s price. For example, if an item is $20 and the sales tax rate is 7%, then the sales tax for that item is $1.40 because 20(0.07) = 1.4. To find the total price for the item (including sales tax), add the item’s original price to the sales tax. total price = $20 + $1.40 = $21.40 A tip is an amount of money added to a bill for service. Tips are usually a percent of the bill before sales tax is added. Sales tax and tips are often estimated instead of being calculated exactly. When estimating with percents, use percents that can be calculated using mental math, such as 1%, 5%, and 10% (or any multiple of 10%).

• To find 10% of a number, move the number’s decimal point one place to the left. • To find 1% of a number, move the number’s decimal point two places to the left. • To find 5% of a number, find 1/2 of 10% of the number.
