Messiahship, but blamed Him for stir ring up the people by that which He did and said. But He silenced them by quoting from their Scriptures, and quoting such a passage as to condemn them. The priests and scribes should have been the first—considering their learning and privileges — to h a v e acknowledged the Saviour as Messiah. Instead, it was “the babes and suck lings” who more readily accepted divine revelation (cf. 1 Cor. 1:27-29).

once, brought the animals, made a sad dle of their garments, and placed Him thereon. He accepted the homage of the peo ple as they honored Him by spreading their garments in the way and by cut ting down the branches of trees and scattering them in the path. While He was ever the meek and lowly One, He received these honors from the people as being God’s appointed King. He accepted the outburst of joy of the multitude as they cried, “Hosanna . ... . Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the high est” (v. 9). Thus they heralded the com ing of the King, the son of Davy, to establish the Messianic kingdom. In Him they recognized—with slight perception at least—the Prince of Peace, coming on the colt in fulfillment of their prophets (cf. Zech. 9:9; Pse» 118:24-26; Isa. 62:11). Had they understood all the prophets had written, they would have looked for Him to die before He reigned. They cried, “Hosanna,” which means, “Save now,” and is a prayer rather than an acclamation. Their emotions were deeply stirred, and their feelings ran high. But alas! Emotion and feeling are not faith. Those who shouted failed to see in the One who rode the colt anything more than a mere prophet, “Jesus the prophet of Nazareth” _(v. 11), instead of their Messiah. in. A sserting M essiah ' s P ower (12-14) Once before (John 2:15) Christ had cleansed the temple; but the people had soon returned to their unholy practices. Now again He asserted His power by casting out of the temple those that bought and sold, and by overthrowing the tables of the money changers, and the seats of those who sold doves. While the buying and selling was a legal and proper business, it was carried on in the wrong place. The temple courts were regarded with no more reverence than public streets. The people had turned the place of communion with God into a scene of commerce with men, the place set apart for God’s glory into, a place for men’s material gain. This tendency is a real danger in the house of God today when there is exaltation of material things over spiritual values. Manifesting what the temple should have been—a place where the power and blessing of God were to be found for the alleviation of human woe—the Lord Jesus healed “the blind and the lame” who "came to him in the temple” (v. 14). In the face of crying human need, the house of God must be no mere market place. IV.
