Time will tell whether there proves to be anything in the new Ontario budget that will be of benefit to Russell Township. Mayor Pierre Leroux returned from last week’s Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) conference in Toronto in time to start working his way through the 400-plus pages of the 2016 Ontario budget released just ahead of the February Leap Year week- end. Both the results of his OGRAmeetings with provincial officials and his initial scan of the provincial budget seempromising but will need some time to determine whether there will be anything of use for the mu- nicipality. “There’s an increase in the OCIF funding,” Mayor Leroux noted. “That’s a definite plus for the municipality.” The Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) assists municipalities with their infrastructure improvements. During the OGRA conference, Leroux met with Jeff Leal, minister for agriculture and rural affairs, about the township’s grant application for a feasibility study on phases two and three of the proposed community recreation and sports complex. The grant application is for $30,000 to assist with study costs. “Hopefully that’ll be positive news,” Le- roux said, adding that the minister seemed supportive but made no firm commitment about the grant. Themayor alsomet with officials from the infrastructure and economic development ministries to explain the township long-term investment proposal for expanding and de- veloping the 417 Industrial Park. Leroux was told there might be future grant programs available to help with that project but again received no firm commitments at present.

Une retraite de la PPO après 28 ans
Le député provincial de Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, Grant Crack (à droite), a récemment remis un certificat de reconnaissance à Julie A. Cyr, sergent à la Police provinciale de l’Ontario (PPO), qui a pris sa retraite après une carrière de plus de 28 ans. Ces dernières années, le sergent Cyr travaillait au détachement d’Embrun de la PPO. M. Crack lui a également remis un certificati d’appréciation de la part de la première ministre, Kathleen Wynne.
