GFX LOWER THIRD: SOL 5000
BEKAH SOSLAND-SIEGFRIEDT: Everybody who worked on Opportunity, we’d get these emails with our Mars weather data for the day. So I looked one day, and it was starting to get really dusty and cloudy in the Opportunity site. So, this image was taken on Sol 5106, and you can see the sun is a big bright spot. But you can see only 3 Sols later the sun has completely disappeared. Yeah, this is really scary.
ILM SFX ANIMATION: CU Mars from space: A red dust storm is sweeping over the planet. KOBIE BOYKINS: There’s this dust storm coming for Oppy. Now, we’ve survived other dust storms on Mars. Opportunity has survived.
ASHITEY TREBI-OLLENNU: A few days into it, I think people began to realize that it was different than anything we’ve ever experienced. ILM SFX ANIMATION: On the surface of Mars, an intimidating dust storm is billowing and filling the sky as it moves across the screen.
GFX LOWER THIRD: SOL 5111
ANGELA BASSETT (V.O.) Rover Diary: Sol 5111. The dust storm that is affecting Opportunity has greatly intensified.
ILM SFX ANIMATION: EWS: Craning down from sky POV: Within the thick dust, we can barely make out Oppy. As we crane down, she begins to disappear. MS from above Oppy: As the dust gets thicker, Oppy’s solar panels collect dust.
