Good Night Oppy Scriptbook

ANGELA BASSETT (V.O.) Rover Diary: A spacecraft emergency was declared, anticipating a low power fault.

GFX ROVER MESSAGE: MY BATTERY IS LOW AND IT’S GETTING DARK.

ILM SFX ANIMATION: MS: Oppy bows her head. Camera pushes into CU as the dust gets so thick that it’s hard to make out Oppy. Atmosphere is very claustrophobic. ABIGAIL FRAEMAN: And then she went dark. But we all said, “We know what to do, we have our little dust storm playbook. And we’re gonna try everything we possibly can to reestablish communication with Opportunity.” DOUG ELLISON: At this point, the wake-up songs had kind of went away, but we then brought the tradition back in the hope that maybe singing will help.

Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go – Wham!

DOUG ELLISON: And we would play them every time we would try to wake the rover up. PRODUCTION ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE: Various shots of JPL in mission control crowded around computers as they try to communicate with Oppy. ILM SFX ANIMATION: Camera zooms out from Oppy covered in dust sitting stationary with head tilted down. ANGELA BASSETT (V.O.) Rover Diary: Sol 5176. It has been over 60 Sols since we lost contact with Opportunity. It may be weeks before the sky is clear.
