Choose joy: That’s the daily goal at Better Vision Optometric Center, P.A. in Fayetteville, N.C., where the team hopes that their positive mindset is contagious to their patients. Last year, partners Brittani Carver-Schemper, OD, and Chris Holland, OD, set out to make their dream of updating their practice a reality, with a top priority of improving the patient experience. In their new, open and airy space, they eliminated the iconic “check-in” desk, instead opting to add a welcome center with a waiting room that feels like a café. Phones were also removed from patients’ view—calls are now received behind the scenes in the practice’s call center—so that those in the office have the undivided attention of the staff. When Dr. Carver-Schemper and Dr. Holland took ownership of Better Vision Optometric Center, P.A. in 2012, they saw an opportunity to challenge themselves to implement better man- agement systems and ultimately, grow the practice. Since then, they have added an advanced dry eye clinic, new instrumenta- tion for their thriving glaucoma practice, and expanded contact lens options to meet all vision needs. By utilizing LensFerry contact lens subscription service, they are able to offer patients the healthiest modality at affordable prices, and their new optical space optimizes the retail experience, even providing patients the option of virtually trying on frames.

The doctors are passionate about optometry-to-optometry referrals and have started a movement in the area to encourage optometrists to refer to each other for specialty services. As a result, the local doctors are learning to work together, viewing each other as colleagues instead of competition. Better Vision Optometric Center is also dedicated to helping its community. Dr. Carver-Schemper was inspired by fellow 2017 Best Practices Honoree Dr. Shauna Thornhill in Ama- rillo, Texas and her “Sight Before Christmas” toy drive. The two were able to connect and Dr. Thornhill has mentored Dr. Carver-Schemper, guiding her through establishing her very own philanthropic program. In 2019, Better Vision Optometric Center held its First Annual “Good Eyes for School Supplies” Outreach Day. Members of the community were able to visit the practice for eye exams in exchange for donating a backpack full of school supplies. Overall, the practice collected 159 full backpacks for children at a local school. Better Vision Optometric Center has become an integral part of the community of Fayetteville, so much so that it has been named the Best Eye Doctor and Best Eyewear/Eyecare Center by the readers of the Fayetteville Observer for three straight years.
