When Mark Kapperman, OD, opened his practice in Chatta- nooga, Tenn. in 1988, he sought to deliver the highest level of care with a patient-centric approach and cutting-edge technology—all while eliciting the feel of a small-town doctor making house calls. Since then, Kapperman, White and McGar- vey (KWM) has grown substantially with Troy White, OD, and Robert McGarvey, OD, joining as partners, and the addition of associate doctor Megan Kortum, OD. But the practice’s core values—which are key to its culture—have remained consis- tent: Integrity. Genuine “I” care. Loyalty. No drama. Work ethic and initiative. The KWM team is empowered to welcome and treat patients as family. Before every exam, certified optometric technicians employ exceptional technology for initial patient testing, and care is taken through each step of the process to ensure patients are educated about their ocular health and refractive status. Each of KWM's four doctors fills a unique niche that enables the practice to provide primary eye care for all ages. The practice is committed to delivering the best options for patients; for example, 80% of KWM’s contact lens wearers are prescribed single use contact lenses, as the doctors believe they are best for ocular health. In addition, toric contact lens prescriptions are considerably above average at the practice because the doc- tors deliver the best possible visual outcomes by aggressively correcting astigmatism. They also prescribe scleral, rigid gas
permeable, hybrid, and orthokeratology contact lens options to solve most every optical correction need. In practice management, KWM utilizes leading business devel- opment and coaching experts to continuously improve. Sched- uling is unique, as the team does not work on Saturdays or Sundays, and each team member works on a four-day schedule to award them an extra day off during the week. Educating optometric students is an integral part of KWM, as it has hosted more than 30 student doctors since 2003. Student doctors are exposed to the business aspect of daily practice, are able to work with four doctors with different areas of focus and personalities, and see a significant number of patients. KWM’s doctors have also served in leadership capacities for local, state, and national organizations. They believe in and promote the independent practice model and enjoy networking with leading national practices through Vision Source events. Eye care mission work is an important aspect of KWM. Each of the doctors has participated in multiple international trips to provide vision care in countries including Uganda, Ecuador, Belize, Panama, Trinidad, Guatemala, Brazil, Dominican Republic, and more than 20 trips to Honduras. At home, the practice also provides eye care for its local Volunteers in Medicine clinic, which serves uninsured and underinsured populations.
