Lindley McPhail, representing the Rus- sell and District Horticultural Society, the sponsoring and organizing group behind the fair, noted that last year’s event had about 2,500 visitors attending for the day. “Every year, we have more,” she said. “People are often surprised at the great ar- ray of things available in a local area.” The fair promotes and highlights local produce, community programs, and health services.

Russell’s annual Living Locally Fair enjoyed its usual success over the January 17 wee- kend. The number of visitors entering through the doors at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School on Saturday to browse among the exhibitors numberedmore than 3,000.

Local and regional artisans like woodworker Claude Bouchard of Clarence- Rockland, enjoyed the opportunity to display their talents and wares.

Sens versus Firemen The ice will be burning up at the Russell Arena in February when the Ottawa Senators Alumni hockey squad face off against the Russell Fire Department’s barnburners in a charity exhibi- tion game for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Tickets for the February 8 match are $10, with children four and under allowed in for free. The Sens club promises there will be a couple of “big name” players from the alumni glory days at the game and available for an autograph session later. Spartacat will also be on hand for photos with his young fans.
