the fire dispatch agreement with the Town of Hawkesbury, a new addition to the UCPR expense sheet. For the next couple of years, the UCPR will cover the cost for the fire dispatch ser- vice that Hawkesbury provides for six other member municipalities in Prescott-Russell. The City of Clarence-Rockland is not covered under the agreement as it has its own con- tract with the City of Ottawa for fire dispatch. The municipal levy

The United Counties of Prescott and Russell council met its budget deadline for 2018 with more than a month spare. The eight mayors gave a unanimous vote of approval Nov. 22 for the 2018 final bud- get report, a two-inch-thick document that made upmore than half of the agenda pack-

earlier.” Removal of all themold from the arena area and adjoining dressing rooms, fol- lowed by sterilization and later testing as part of public health safety precautions is all done. “All the tests came out good,” Lavoie added. “We’re now hoping for the first week of January to reopen.” What remains to do, he noted, are some minor repairs to the cement slab of the arena, replacing of the old boards and plexiglass, and some other details. While the arena was closed to the public, com- plex staff took advantage of the situation to repaint all of the dressing rooms and the hallway. Final cost for the cleanup and refur- bishing won’t be known until early next year after all the invoices are submitted. Lavoie is also waiting for word from the town’s insurance agent about coverage for the costs.

If all the remaining refurbishing work goes well inDecember, then the Hawkes- bury Hawks can return to roost in their home arena when the junior A hockey season schedule resumes in January. Alain Lavoie, public works superinten- dent, toldHawkesbury council, during its Nov. 27 public session, that work is almost finished on cleaning up and restoring the arena portion of the Robert Hartley Sports Complex, after it was shut down earlier this fall because of an unexpected mold problem. He told council that the arena should be ready to reopen in January if the rest of the cleanup and revamping work is completed without any problems during December, before the Christmas holiday break. “For sure bymid-January,” Lavoie said during a later interview. “Maybe a little

report for final review and approval. Council approved the budget almost as soon as Mé- nard-Brault finished reading out the report. “We have a lot of confidence in her re- port,” said Warden Gary Barton. Ménard- Brault thanked council for its vote of confi- dence in her and her staff for their work on the 2018 budget. The final document projects an overall operations and capital works budget of about $106million for the counties. That includes

per cent increase for the residential tax rate, which translates to $27more for the average homeowner on the counties property tax bill. Property tax notices will not go out until next spring after the provincial assessment calculations are finished. Some property owners may have higher or lower tax bills than the projected average, depending on whether or not their land and buildings have increased in value compared to the counties’ average.
