September 27, 1942 HELPING OUR FRIENDS TO LIVE AT THEIR BEST G a l a t ia n s 6:1-6 By Idella Sieben Introduction “A friend of mine in his journey Is come to me, and I haye nothing to set before him.” Such was the need rec ognized in the story of the “ Friend at Midnight,” as told by the Lord Jesus Christ (Lk. 11:5-10). And many a Christian young man or young woman today feels his own helplessness and inadequacy to meet his friends’ deep est needs. If an earthly friend, roused at midnight, would respond to the importunity of one who pleaded for help for a friend, how much more w ill our gracious and powerful God! For Those Who Have Topics . “ In the spirit of meekness; consid ering thyself, lest thou also be tempt ed” (Gal. 6:1)—such must be the sin cere humility underlying all our ef forts. Young people despise cant or sanctimoniousness! I. HELPING BY EXAMPLE (1 Tim. 4:12). “ Be thou an example of the believ ers . . .” Note that this command was given to a young man. 1. Paul’s l i f e (1 Cor. 4:16; Phil. 3:17). Note that Paul’s was an exam ple of following Christ (1 Cor. 11:1; 1 Thess. 1:6). 2. Requirements (1 Pet. 5:3; 1 Cor. 8:9-13; 2 Thess. 3:9; cf. vs. 7 and 10). II. HELPING BY TRUST (Phil. 1:6). “I have confidence in you through the Lord" (Gal. 5:10). “ And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and w ill do the things which we com mand you” (2 Thess. 3:4). 1. Contrast the appeal that modern psychology and sociology make for “ faith in man” and belief in “ the di vine spark in every man” with what the Word of God says of the unsaved (Eph. 2:1) and the saved (Rom. 7:18). 2. With our confidence centered in God and in what He w ill do for our Christian friends, we can encourage them by showing plainly that we are expecting them to yield to the Lord’s w ill and to grow in grace (cf. 2 Cor. 7:6-16). An example of legitimate con-, fidence in a Christian friend is found in Paul’s letter to Philemon, a mes sage which by its courtesy and gra ciousness would fairly impel Philemon to rise to Paul’s expectation of him (cf. v. 21).
