Spelling champ bzzzy with “retirement” plans
“The winning word was easy,” she said. “The ones before weren’t. I got my word right, and she got her word wrong. When I heard it (fascination), I knew I was going to win.” At the age of 15, Veronica Penny is a re- tired national spelling champion. She is one year over the maximum age limit allowed for competitors in the Scripps American International Spelling Bee Championship so that is that for spelling competitions this year and for future years for her. Now she’s turning her focus onto other things. Like Air Cadets, in which she holds a flight corporal’s rank, and getting more in- volved in her biathlon training. Last winter was her first major competitive season and while she didn’t score a high placing she is still satisfied with both her speed on the skis and her shooting skill to look forward to the start of next season’s competition. For the future, Penny has a dream of go- ing to university and entering into a medi- cal program. “I know I want to be a doctor.” One thing is for sure, she won’t have any trouble with names in her anatomy class.

The 15-year-old Rockland girl is a three- time national spelling champion after de- feating all comers May 12 in Toronto at the Spelling Bee of Canada Championship. Ask this living lexicon how she spells suc- cess, and the young lady has to do a men- tal page-through of all the synonyms she knows. “Success? Oddly enough, I can’t think of one right away. Achievement maybe. Or tri- umph.” Penny is still winding down after her sen- sational Sunday score. The excitement of being a three-time national champion is only just starting to pale a bit. “I’m still pretty happy,” she said. In Toronto, Penny squared off against two dozen other regional finalists. She and an- other girl from Scarborough, Ontario ended up sparring with each other in the finals. They vied against each other’s vocabu- lary through four rounds and give-and-take with each of them scoring three correct re- sults and dropping the verbal ball on one of the word challenges they received from the judges. Penny agreed that the situation was becoming nerve-wracking as they entered into what proved the fifth and final spell-off session. Her rival went first and was asked to spell “sleeveen”, from the original Gaelic Irish word,“slíbhin”, for a trickster, a rogue or cun- ning rascal. She stumbled and then it was Penny’s turn. Her word? Even she was surprised when she was asked to spell “fascination”. Even so, she still went through her standard compe- tition ritual of asking all the allowed ques- tions of the judges: word definition, its use in a sentence, and a final repeat of the word itself.
